ITB Nuendo Mix - Pop/Rock. Critique...

Just finished producing a record with this band.

Check out one of the mixes. let me know what you think.

Tracked at my studio, mixed in Nuendo.
any critique would be excellent.

cheers

Nice mix! I would bring up the vox a bit (.5-1db) on the chorus but everything else sounds really good to me. Maybe turn the guitars down by .5 or 1db.

hey ed,

thanks for listening.
yeah the gtrs were tricky int he chorus, i wanted to give it that very forward guitar sound but finding the right level for it was tricky!
i hear you on the vox comment, again, tricky to place. maybe i will budge them up a tad. i dont want them to stick out toooo much though.

cheers for the ears!

That bass tone rocks.

Do your drums get reverberated ITB or is that the actual drum room I'm hearing?
Sounds like its all there to me!
It is very slick and modern, but I like the way you preserve a natural sounding midrange at the same time. Nothing scooped or fake sounding.

Superb translation to my little computer speakers. To me thats the acid test.

Excellent mix! I've not heard one of this quality on Gearslutz before. My only criticism is that I would like to hear a bit more life in the snare and toms. Maybe less compression, or a different one, and a maybe some more edge to it. What did you use on it, and how much? Was it buss only, track only, or both? Still quite an impressive mix no matter what. Great Vocals(that singer sure didn't hurt) and guitars.

Fantastic!!
If you could get up the nerve to back away from the volume wars
a bit, it would be completely amazing.

Everything is so slammed to 0 these days. it sucks.

hey slapback,

its about 80% room, 20% reverb plugin.

there are a few room mics...i usually have a stereo room pair setup with a pair of 4033a's, then a u87 room slammed throuhg a distressor, and a crunchy i5 dynamic going through an 1176 and fatso. all in different areas. i use them according to what i need. i.e. 2nd verse is mainly the u87 as i wanted the centre to be focused and wanted it sounding a little bit mono.

nice work!

turn the hihat down by 3db on the "solo tickling" part and 0,5 to 1db generally.

git down and bass up.

bass sounds too mono, spread it a bit.

snare and toms could sound more attacked, volume fits fine.

vocals could take a push at about 250-350.

sounds amazing man!

the only thing that stuck out at all to me is that one keyboard synth in the begginning kinda sounds like that effect when a cell phone is by a speaker... doesnt really sound like anything musical to me. i had to search for my phone thinking someone was calling when i heard it :p

thats a really minor complaint though, great work!

pre's were api's, vintech 1073 clones, and audient pre's from the desk. and an avalon 737

drums were mainly 1073 and api,
guitars were 2 amps running at same time (mesa/marshall). 2 mics on each cab, 57 going to 1073, 121 going to api (x2 for each cab).
vox was gemini > api > distressor

cheers!

Great sounds!

The whole thing is pretty darn squashed though. The intro is the loudest part.

My only crits would be the breakdown before the final chorus. The guitars sound gated in an unnatural way, and the choruses do sound a little cut and paste. It would be good to get something else in on the last chorus to lift it a smidge.

I am totally picking nits though. Its a great mix!

Sounds great... but really needs some macro dynamic fades. The chorus sounds small in comparison to the verse.

It's a great sounding chorus.. just need to be *actually* louder than the verse, rather than implying more loudness like it's doing right now.

All IMHO.

Great mix and really good song. If I have to nitpick, I would say maybe turn up the vox vol. on the chorus a little. Also git can be a little more warm/colored than this for my taste. Other than these I don't know what can be improved, it is really good, congrats.

God it's like throwing gold to a bunch of pigs on this forum. The pigs are scrambling around their pig pin rooting around in the mud not knowing what to do with the gold they've been given. So many ignorant people posting comments on a mix they couldn't even begin to approach...

pretty cool!

I totally love the vocals.

but forgive me I not a fan of these keyboard sounds.
1) at the beginning in the left ear it sounds like an accidental distortion
2) 0:45 etc keyboard sounds something like digital while guitars sound analog, also 2:00 the vcf part (to pack it into the most simple wording - I would have used the most dirty available analog chorus stomp box and a minimoog if I had one.)
ok I say this a s a DX7 + D70 player ;)

from the taste, I like genres with a bit more transparent guitar sounds.
but I see the very positive comments here so it's only me.

Who gives a shit about your taste unless you present one of your mixes that sound even close to this?

Exactly, you mixes sound like Radio Shack Crap with Casio keyboards. Go **** yourself asshole!!!
