Rock Mix Crit Please.

Hi All,

First post on this highly addictive forum. Can't get enough of the audio files section. Anyhoo, I have been doing this mix for a young band and I'd really appreciate your fine tuned ears to have a gander and see what you think.

I'm not sensitive so don't hold back on my account.

Thanks very much.....

Hi,
I just took a listen with headphones and you have some nice sounds there but it sounds a bit rough so there's still something to do imao. Speaking about drumsounds toms sound a bit confusing, I mean they could localize a bit better in stereofield. Now they are a bit everywhere maybe pan the close mic'd tracks more like the toms sound through the overheads? Right panned guitar sounds a bit loud, or louder than the left one so careful balansing between them might make the mix sound a bit bigger. Bass drum sound is quite nice and realistic but I think it could punch a bit more, maybe cut some 200hz and add a bit 6khz to make it sound bigger too?

It's my personal favor, but I would like to hear some delay/reverb action in the mix to give it some 3D Anyway keep going

Thanks for the comments, really helpful. Sometimes I just seem to get lost in the mixing process and then can't see the wood for the trees. Your thoughts are right on,
Thanks a mill.

vocals sound very dry, kick needs more definition and possible a low freq cut. otherwise the mix is pretty cool. sounds like you have a good drum room there.

i wouldn't actually change much. i really liked the volume difference in the two hard-panned guitar parts, it gives the mix a bit of character and nuance. and don't get rid of the dryness on the vocals (or indeed the guitars), the best thing the song has going for it is claustrophobia. it has elements of at the drive-in and early manic street preachers which it would be a pity to dampen through more conventional mixing.

i'm not impressed with the drums though, i think something much more simple and up-close would fit the song, at least in its current form better.

you seem to suggest that you arrived at this mix almost by accident, i think you should be pretty pleased that you didn't make the usual decisions and still got a good result out of what, in my opinion, is a very limited song.

I know what you mean about the drums. The drummer unfortunately would take no direction from either myself or the other members of the band and consequently the song is really lacking a good drum track. The drums do sound pretty weedy when they are dry.

I do really appreciate all of your comments, I find them helpful and does give my confidence a small boost to know that it ain't all bad.

Thank you all very much.

as already mentioned, the vocals are a bit too dry and the result aren't glued with the rest of the track as well as they could be.i see what you might be going for though, in that it's like that SoAD type vocal sound the toms could hit a little harder too.but other than that, it's good stuff and kudo's.
