One Mic. One Preamp. One Songwriter. My Debut Album.

Just like to hear some feedback from you slutz about the sound of my record. I wrote everything and recorded at home here in London with one modded Oktava MK319 on everything (except drums where there was an extra kick and snare mic), a Chandler Germanium, a 1/4" tape machine and a computer. Mixed at a friends on a Soundtracs desk back to 1/4".

I know myspace really isnt the place to hear sonics but love to know if you like it musically! MySpace.com - Tom Wright - UK - Japanese Classic Music / Japanese Classic Music / Japanese Classic Music - www.myspace.com/tomwrightsound

Cheers!

i started to listen to moonlight arch. what you were going for and the vibe was cool, but honestly, it's like every instrument was veiled and smeared in some way. I didn't get a good fix on anything playing. i didn't really care for the hard panned sax on deja either. it actually made it a bit difficult to listen to.

i didn't hear one japanese lyric, motif or kyoto either?

partial songs on myspace in this day n' age is rather presumptuous also. when you have major's putting full songs on myspace, surely, you can?

I understand your points, cheers, i'll go and learn japanese asap. I wish people would read more carefully though. As i hinted at, myspace compresses the audio quality down to offensively shit levels and therefore I knew a sonic judgement would not be on the cards. I was more interested what people thought of the music.

Hey Cennay. Thanks for your words! I should mention on the myspace that its not me playing drums on the tracks that are up. Other songs on the record it is. Also the sax on deja is not me but yes, all the rest is.

Sonically, everything was in the red to be honest! Germanium preamp had its feedback on full the whole time. Hit the tape hard, analog desk, mixdown back onto tape hard. Shame I had to put it into the computer because **** trying to afford a 2" multitrack when your 18! <- which i was a year ago when i recorded it. haha.

I think this work is pretty interesting, which is more than i can say for most of what's out there these days!

If i heard it at a friends house, i'd probably look it up later and give it a shot. That says a lot for me!

I'm just as into musical as techical aspects of albums, so only time would tell, and more than samples, if this would grow on me.

I'd be really interested to hear high quality samples, perhaps you could post clips up here.

Most importantly, keep it up dude. I don't think anything discouraging needs to be said around here for this kind of content. If you look around this board you'll notice a lot of people have a lot to say when they won't put themselves out there for criticism themselves.

I enjoyed the clip of fortune tellers shape most. Pretty nice vibe if you played most of this stuff. well done.

Good songs and sound quality. The Germanium pre did well for you.

I agree with Audio Hombre that you should post the full-length song. And why mess with MySpace and its low-res?

cheers for listening slutz! and i appreciate your response.

the only reason i put samples on myspace is because i'm desperate for people to actually buy the record and listen to it all the way through. I'm giving twice more time than Itunes does but yes im also aware that a minute usually isnt enough time to express the vibe your trying to.

The reason its on myspace (which has quite frankly shite audio quality) is because its sad but true that myspace can be very good for networking with younger people like myself (who can be so ****ing stupid that they can't tell the difference between a green bus and a red bus, let alone a 80kpbs MP3 and a CD quality file).

i will post up full tracks in higher quality if you want to hear them.
cheers
tom

The 'Summer Evening' backing-vocal hook reminds me a bit too much of the guitar in the track on Radiohead's 'OK Computer' with the 'lost it completely' lyric. The one about being taken up into an alien spaceship. Especially given the ambient guitar in the background.

There are a number of phrases in your stuff that definitely remind me a bit too much of... something or other... Darn it!! What is it?! 'Nobody Does It Better' or something? Does it matter?!

I agree that you should probably let us hear more of the music, not little clips. There is a fine line between tantalising and annoying.

This music doesn't have much of a mojo for my tastes. It can sound a bit clinical or artificial or something. But it's pretty well done. There's no reason IMO why it shouldn't sell, if you can avoid being too smug or pretentious with it.

actually it really doesnt. It just plays an mp3 of your song. I thought the same way as you, but I have been putting hundreds of different songs on my myspace for about 3 years now and your wrong.

The way in which people talk to each other on this gearslutz forum astounds me. I am truly saddenned by many people's etiquette on here. "ive been on myspace for 3 years and your wrong". Typical example. Surely its kids like me who should be talking like this. Why do you all feel the need to get at each other on here?? Is it boredom, is it for a laugh, is it because you genuinely get upset when someone makes a mistake??

I dont particularly like or agree with what 'woomanmoomin' said about my music but that's his/her's opinion. I can totally accept this. But i dont see why this 'dylansmale' should feel content talking to me like he does.

Firstly, for your information sir, i have also been on myspace for 3 years on different music accounts.

Secondly, i may not have the infinite wisdom of some of the people on these forums (who cant sleep at night until they've argued someone's personal opinion in the most arrogant and aggressive way they can) but i do know that an mp3 is a compressed audio file. The sound is compromised. Fact. Therefore I am right.

Please feel free to highlight areas of this message, post a reply claiming that everything i've said is wrong and i should be banished from the universe because i dont know what i'm talking about. Shame on me for replying to this myself, i've obviously got just as much to do with my day as the person who takes the time out to tell me not that they like what i'm doing, but the fact i am wrong. Thanks very much for the support.

Yep, this is a forum that has an abrupt style some of the time. For better or worse. Dont over-react to that. There are many skilled engineers here who are surprisingly polite. I think it balances out.

Sounds good Tom but why not just include the iTunes link so people can listen to better quality samples? There is quite a bit of difference to the samples on his myspace vs iTunes to whoever said they where the same, just listen...

I'll link it for you here: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/M...05223&s=143441

Also, there are ways to stream high quality mp3's on myspace because other people have done it. I personally hate myspace but I do understand that it can potentially be good for promotional purposes.

It sounds cool, man. All this shit about deja sax sounding panned to hard in one direction is all ra-ra-ra bickering.

Your shit sounds cool, and I listened to it with 20/20 cans on through a 24-bit/96kHz sound card.

The masters sound even hotter I assume :O)

I wish everyone said that! Wish ampex or studer were still manufacturing J37s and 440b multitracks. The world would be a better place (for me anyway)
