Cool Recorded, Produced, Mixed, Mastered=lil' old me

I've been lurkin' here for a mighty long time, but now I feel like '**** it' might as well join in. This is off of an LP that we (Me-Producer/E.S.G.-Artist) just released, independently. I'm really curious about what some of the more "ENLIGHTENED" folks, that I really admire, here think about different aspects of recording, mix, etc..

Thanx in advance

Thanx Dim.
Any comments on the guitar or bass tones? I'm especially concerned about the solo @ the end. Too much overall compression? Just having fun second guessing myself.

Great production and I really dig the sound...was it mixed with a board or ITB?

Me's diggin man

I feel however, that you could take a little bit more advantage of the stereo field and that the vox could be a tad louder?

Cool dude.

I'm not much into hip-hop. The production is super. I think the guitar solo at the end sits fine in the mix and IMVHO is not overcompressed.

It's just that it started at about 4:06. At 4:30, I was tired of it. and it went almost another minute. Ready to turn the song off but was curious just how long it went.

Man I really appreciate all the input! Thanx, and it was all ITB (Mix5 w/888-24,thinking about an Rosetta 800 though), except for some outboard compression on the mix buss (bus).

We're @ #73 on Billboard's R&B/Hip Hop chart. I'm feelin' good. I kinda feel like maybe I could contribute around here, you know, participate instead of just lurking.
I really appreciate all the great info you guys share. I know it's mostly about rock and such but I think most of it is applicable to any genre.

Tite. Quite a lineup there. ESG, Bun B (I think?), Slim Thug...

Sounds good to me (better than I remember previous ESG stuff sounding too...).

Now, how's it sound screwed & chopped?

ttauri-Yep, Bun B of UGK on 1st verse, ESG on 2nd, & Slim on 3rd. What do you know about screwed & chopped in Jersey? You should check the ESG & Slim cd "Boss Hogg Outlaws".

syra-5 string, strat, a buncha modules(give or take a couple), and an MPC 3k.

everybody-thanx

Every one was on a 103 but I mix up the pre's. I think a couple of them thru a 2022 and one of them and the singer an MP2NV, and all of them through a CL-2A.
I think the bass was thru a bass balls>q-tron>U5 (I think).
All the synths & MPC stuff were tracked thru either U5's or the DI's on a pre (love the GR DI on sample kicks).
As far as the vocals are concerned, I always seem to have trouble with the vocal levels , especially on tracks that I produce . I think I like to hear myself.
I'll be better next time I promise!

A friend introduced me to Screw a few years back with a copy of his "June 27th" tape, and it was one of those "oh sh*t!!!!" moments.

Add in hearing Devin's first solo (quickly became one of my all-time favorites) and Mista Madd's "Down South" with Slim & Yungstar around the same time, and it led to me paying a lot more attention to Houston rap than the average East-Coaster.

Yeah, I never got that Boss Hogg LP. Gotta add it to the list.

Oh I'm vibeing to this, great. Love the production on the vocal hook. Wish I could get this kind of sound myself. All the little synth sounds are cool as well. My only criticism is that the guitar solo is a little long winded. I think it might be more effective if it peaked a bit quicker and you were fading out by about by about 4.48 also a grittier sound might be more effective. But all in all very nice work.

yeah, everyone seems to be in agreement about the long solo at the end. i was going for an old 70's elongated funk kinda thing, oh well. i'll consider that next time.
what specifically do you mean by grittier?
thanx everyone for the critisisms, i think this sort of conversation makes us all better (me at least).

Sin. By gritter I suppose I meant an edgier dirtier sound which might create a bit more tension.

I think the vocals could have been a bit higher (1dB maybe). The guitar solo is to long..nothing really happens in the playing.

Otherwise it's awesome.

Very nice, I realy liked the transitions going into and coming out of hooks.

The mix was great on my standards, (vocals a shy low) ITB!!!! very inspirational, I need to step it up!

How did you route the bus compression?

Out the 888/24 into pre or comp or... back in?

Here's an edit just for fun trying to get the vocals up and to warmify it a bit.
