how's this mix?

This is one of the few big projects i've done apart from my own music. We're doing 10 songs. The bands manager wants to recut all the vocals at his own studio using a lawson/e.a.r. limiter/1272 vox chain. The band and myself feel things are sounding great as they are. Their manager is pretty adamant about this especially using the limiter during tracking. I see no reason why we can't just use it during the mix. I'd like to know what all my fellow geeks and sluts think though. Also, how is the mix as a whole sounding?

I like the instrumental mix, but vocals actually have an issue.
to me voice sounds somewhat too sharp, and the "s" is not quite natural.
I don't see why a particular limiter shall cure it. but different choice and placing of the mic(s) might do much on it.
re-tracking depends on costs, of course.

you might try to analyze the vocal spectrum and put a hand-drawn EQ on it (like voxengo curve eq has) to correct some of the sharpness. sometimes best settings may look quite edgy.

then you could use a 4band comp, where you compress everything a bit, but the upper mid range less than the others. if still an issue, you can try a de-esser (tune it higher than usual).
you can bring in a mult that is quite dry, to add some "body".

if there is already severe limiting in the track, it might not work so well.

2 cents to experiment, if your time is ok to spend.

thats quite a few downloads and no comments. It must suck pretty hard??? You can shoot me straight people, come on.

I do agree with you neovxr about the sharp vox though. Maybe a bit of sibilance. thanks

I'm listening through my soundcard with AKG headphones. I think this mix is kick ass. The one and only thing I can say with definite certainty is that the vox needs to come up in level/volume. Otherwise, I think when turned up, this is a very cool sounding mix. The tone of the guitars are cool, it really plays well with the bass. I also liked the mic'ing for the cymbals, whether as overheads or close mic'd. The panning within the stereo field on them is superb.

In my opinion, it may not be loud, or commanding, but it sounds good. Just beef up the vox.

I think its sounds pretty good. If anything the vocals just need to come up above the rest of the band, I can barely hear them on nearfields and you know that means they will disappear in the car.

The vocals have a somewhat low-midrange sucked sound... they need more beef, maybe get him closer to the mic and track with a compressor.

Maybe turn down the gtrs a bit or low cut them...

What about;
1. turn down the guitars package just a little bit and put som high pass on them
2. turn up the vocals alot. I think I can hear a descent sound on it but it's much to low
3. try to warm the vocals with a Vintage Warmer or something if you're in the box. Try to EQ it too to get precence.
4. why not trying a delay on the vocals, think it could work in this one. It has a psycadelic nerve...
5. try to make the vocals into a psycadelic "mess" using whatever you have...flanger for example maybe like the old Sabbath "universe" (don't remember the name) song...covered by Pantera

I think it sounds great!! but it would sound even better with my suggestions I think.

Love that Fender piano at the end ....
