Song for an album I'm finishing...

Hey there.. I wanted to run this mix by a few ears before we send it off to mastering. The artist is Jason Quicksall and the style is alt-country.

Any comments on the mix would be great!! Thanks...

Hey Wallace,

Nice work. I would say, don't touch it. To me it would be nice if the voice was put more into the space that say the drums are in with a touch of something to add decay.

Sounds like a record though man. I can't critique it too much. Well done!

I really like the drum sound.

It actually wouldn't hurt to bring a bit more bottom into this mix i don't think. Move a bit more air in general, maybe just adding some 50-70hz wide q bell curve. It would be subtle though, a couple db at most, might make things a little fuller.

Rock on.

ok, so i was a bit off on numbers. I just played it with media player that has some crappy eq and i created a 6db peak soft bell curve centered at 62hz which is the closest to the right spot in my mind and that seems to have made it sound fantastic to my ears, but everyone has their own preference, plus i'm listening on crappy speakers here but they should extend properly so i figure i'm not far off the mark.

I feel goofy for posting thrice, but part of my low end sugestion could result from what i'm listening on which is not at a studio, so definately try adding a bit in that spot but maybe not as much as i mentioned in the last post.. cheers.

Lakeshore,

Thanks for taking the time to write. I know the vocals are on the dry side. However, I tried all different types of reverb and delay and nothing seemed to work. Maybe I can send the vocal to the snare verb.

I'll also will check the kick to see if there is anything I can add at 60 hz, however, I know I boosted a few fundamentals in the kick. If it's a general bump I think my mastering guy can add it.

The drums were recorded and performed by one of our own gearsluts, Jon Mattox. I'd recommend checking him out.

Thanks again for the comments.

cool man. Yeah the low end thing is mostly preference i think.

The vocal sounds good like that for sure. it sits well. It MIGHT sound more cohesive with something on it but its hard to say.

Again great job!

yes I think very good indeed!
very warm and natural, it could have a little more air, but i think this can easily be done in mastering.
Definitely a good job!

Well done Wallace, nice mix. As said before, a touch more bass would make it even stronger. Don't be bass shy

Thanks guys. The bass could be a bit louder but it wasn't recorded that well and I feel like this is a happy medium. Everything else is Neve and API. The vocals do have a TOUCH of verb but it's not really very long or wet. Either I don't have the right verb for the job or I just don't know how to make it sit. What types of verb would you guys choose? Plate, hall, or what? What kind of times?

Thanks for the advice!

sounds very good on computer headphones. i like dry vocals too but there seems to be just a hair of too upfrontness but thats just personal pref. i'd also cut in on some of those breaths and attenuate them a bit. the forwardness of the neve (i'll assume) is really throwing them up there. easy fix though.

the banjo sounds terrible - perfect!

Sounds truly great. Props again to drums... The whole mix has a very live "I'm in the room with these guys" feeling. Tough to do.

The song is fun and chill at the same time, making a very listenable track. It kinda reminds me of Shawn Mullins meets bluegrass.

Thanks for sharing..
