Question No Autotune

A friend of mine who is a great singer is starting to put together a album. She wrote a song titled "No Better" I thought the song was good and suggested she put it up on her myspace page for feedback, the response so far has been great with lots of great comments. One message baffled me from a musician in USA it read

Subject: autotune.....

Body: .... is killing me on your "no better" demo.

you need people with better skills if you're gonna let 'em mess with your vocals like that.....

wishing you all the best,
She recorded the vocals herself and NO pitch correction was used as she has great pitching and never has to use pitch correction (she also plays violin and piano). Anyway, she message the guy back telling him she does not need to use autotune and he replied say "there is no way she can convince him otherwise.

Can somebody please tell me why he would have thought she was using autotune?

MySpace.com - Nicola Sipprell - New Track - South East London, UK - R&B / Soul / Pop - www.myspace.com/nicolasipprell

also this is her without mics

YouTube - nicolasipprell's Channel

She is also looking for producers to help her put together her album along with the two producers she already has.

She does a lot of vocal acrobatics, and doing so many trills and slides and other tricks make it sound a little like it was autotuned. Honestly, it sounds a little autotuned to me in parts, but it's very possible that she is a good enough singer to nail each note on those fast slides. But if vocals sound like they are hitting discrete notes instead of a sloppier slide, it is remarkably similar to autotune.

Also, her vocals sound awfully processed. There are a few spots where it sounds like the vocals were clearly punched in. All you can really do to convince people is live performance. Other than that, some people are impossible to convince on anything

I have been using a lot of pitchtune correction in songs (no autotune but just correcting small parts with Melodyne) and I believe I can hear it in a lot (if not all) modern productions you hear on the radio. When pitchtune correction makes a vocal sound better, I believe it's not a problem to use it. However, many times when I hear it so obvious in a professional production, I get a little frustrated. Why can't they make it sound natural. It's possible for cyring out loud.

Having said that... I hear absolutly no pitchtune correction at all in the song "No Better".

I do however think she sings a little bit strange.. If I would record a song with her, I would suggest not to do so many vocal acrobatics. But that's just me.

Thanks for the replies.

the awful processing is my fault. all on Aux channels. Revibe, VSS3. Waves ? and soundtoys? I'll have to load da track up to be more specific on which of the last plugs was used.

She recorded the vocals at home, using a TLM 193 and a SPL Channel One via digital out into Cubase v3.

I imported the audio files into pt hd.

She has limited recording technical abilities. so she does not punch in. I did notice from the audio files, that she did not have the spl's gate setup up right, because I could hear and see the tails of her lead vocals squaring off and diminishing early. Her bruv was next door practicing cello and her dad up stairs practicing or teaching piano.

I've known this girl for over 5 years. The funny thing was when we read the message from the guy, she was like "what’s autotune" . That message and her response, was so funny. I set up the plugs on her pc (eqs verbs) and she still uses the ones that come with cubase .

the mic and pre she lent from me, so blame me if that was the wrong choice. the audio file was given to me un processed. She was using a rode nt1 and Line 6 Toneport before.

This girl is pitch perfect, you should see this girl track her harmonies in each key without having to hear each take. tape would be to slow for her .

Thank you both on your comments and we love the fact that you noticed she is different or strange as you put it . She performed live tonight so we will put that up on youtube
