Beatles Revolver Session Out Take

Well not really, but someone thought it was :) JK

I recorded this last night. I love tracking Beatle tunes. It's a favorite pastime. This is "Here, There and Everywhere." I did it for a friend of mine since they had heard some older tunes I had done... I think you guys will get a kick out of it... If you want ask me what I used..

Pearlman TM1 on vocals for a start :)

Coolness..

Definately a load of fun.

Would be fun to limit yourself to similar equipment and recording techniques too!

i.e. 4 tracks and 2 mics on the drums.

Nice job : )

I'm only 21. I've been recording Beatles songs since I was 11. So it takes some practice :) Played in tribute bands through the years..

#1- Get the instruments.
-I used a Gretsch 6120 and an Epiphone Casino. These were two guitars heavily used around the time of Revolver as well as the strat and Rick Bass.
- Vox AC30
-Vintage Ludwig Downbeat Kit from the 60's

#2- Mic Pre's I used a V72 on the guitars, drums, bass... I used it on vocals with a Vintech X73. Used the Chandler TG-1 on everything! Bass, Guitar, Vocals, Drums... Different settings of course..

#3- I recorded it how the beatles recorded it. Paul had his Casino plugged into an amp, had a U67 up and running and began to lay it down with ringo keeping a back beat. It's very possible that George or John played bass on this. George had just recently played bass on She Said She Said because Paul was not around when this was tracked...

So I sat up a TM1, miked the amp with a Sennheiser 421, and sat there and did a one off singing and playing... Listened, dug it and started overdubs... It was important to have the guitar and vocals live because in the real recording you can hear the room and the guitar and vocals together fairly clearly..

Used a nice EMT-250 for the Ooohs. Didn't do much else to the track. Maybe an LA2A on the bass ITB.

The fourth and eighth chord of the chorus should be a D7, not F. Sorry, just that wrong/inappropriate chords are very jarring to me

Other than that, really cool recording! Wish it was on analog tape though, I bet that'll sound spooky

What kind of snare were you using? Any damping or special things about it? How was it miced?

Love the sound of it.

Good call.

Addtionally the supporting vocals are not voiced correctly or are sometimes left out. Compare the intros. For quick example in the intro, in your version you have the notes D and G above D going to D and F# in the supporting vocals. In the Beatles recording the notes are G, B and D all moving up to B, D and F#.

Also the main vocal is overdubbed and panned pretty hard left and right. Yours is a single main vocal.

Also, add some gain to the main vocal (but don't bring it out anymore in the mix) and put a high pass on the vocal and drop or boost in the 1k range a few dbs to match the original.

Well I'll make an edit for the audiofiles here. I wasn't trying to sell this anywhere, it was just a fun recording that has a good vibe and sounds good to my ears!

Anyway, as far as the drums go, I used one mic. I used a Pearlman TM1 over the kit through a V72 through the Chandler TG1. That's it. Used a 60's ludwig kit with a ludwig supraphonic snare. With a little tape on it. All vintage zildjian cymbals.

I did the drums on this one. Used some 1960's Zildjians. I've been through about 20 cymbals or so from the 60's until I found the right ones. You're manly hearing the 18 inch crash.

Get Back

Wicked job!

Please post more songs if you have been doing this sinds 11. It's educational.

-

Just for fun:

Attached is a fragment of a getback me and my band did as a jam for fun after recording a song. It sounds more like Ike and Tina's version than the beatles.

Oh yeah, soooo sorry about the brickwall limiting. Something went wrong, will have to do another mix some day. Cymbles and everything ugly ugly.

Very nice Hamburg.

I like to do the same thing, track beatles songs! I try to make them fairly accurate. Right now I am working on "every little thing". I used a capoed/tuned down Rickenbacker 360 12 rather than the 325 12.

I don't want to hijack your thread, but i'll post some rough mixes here. I wish I had a singer like you. Your voice is perfect for the beatles stuff. I'm just not going to be able to reach the high notes on Every Little Thing.

By the way, do you have uncompressed .wav or flac files of your songs?
I'd like to add them to my collection. I can do anything up to 24bit 196kHz.

Electric guitars do sound good.

You have the timing of the guitars wrong in the main riff. The first note of almost every repetition but the first of the main riff starts on the & of beat 4. You have yours starting on beat 1 every time.

Where are the vocal harmonies?!

The solo is missing some key things. The chords are wrong and the notes of the guitar are wrong. There are piano chords missing, they are not hard ones either, just repetitions in the right hand of a D major and a G7 chord, octaves in the bass. Just put them in there. And listen to the guitar melody closer. There is a brilliant unprepared dissonance of a C# against the G7 chord. It's so cool because only the Beatles would have thought of such a wacky, unexpected note. And the main guitar riff does not continue during the solo.

And did you try singing an octave up with more of a Beatles tone?

Hi Jerome!
Are you referring to "every little thing"? It's not finished yet. Piano parts go in soon. I see from your web site you are a composer. I found many
tab represntations and all are different. I know I missed the dissonance in
the solo...I thought he just partially flubbed a chord but it sounded good.
The tab I used must not be right.
Feel free to pm me about it...i'll listen! Then we won't hijack hamburg's thread here!

Enjoyed it. Fellow admirer and student of the Beatles' work here... It's called pop but it's pure art, man.

Thanks , tim. A number of us enjoy making these covers. In doing so you find out quickly that the beatles were really crafty musicians.

Jerome is kindly helping me with the lead in "what you're doing". The first part is not right. There is a dissonace missing, and I want to find it.

There are a number of us doing beatle covers over at Rickresource, and after hearing Hamburg's clip we want to talk him into doing some tracks with us. We all think the "Here ,There and Everywhere" he did was damn near perfect.
