Indie/Shoegaze/ noisy rock song!

Hey everyone!
I'm finishing up mixing my bands new album.

the sleepover disaster - Home

I'd love to get some feedback on one of the new songs.
Its called Funnel Cloud

I'm beginning to get tunnel vision and could use some outside perspective.

Good / bad or indifferent I'll take it in stride, but for god's sake please remember no one likes it when someone just outright calls there "baby" ugly

Thanks,
ERic

whoa, that was badass

i can see someone suggesting that you roll off a bit of the low freq on the kick drum as it definately has some "thump" to it, but i think it gives the song a "live" feel and totally fits the vibe (i like low-end thump, but my taste is questionable ).

Low Shelve the pad, its a muddying up the mix. The kick and snare need to be up 5 dB. Gtrs need bite.. 3-5K I think. Vox up 3 dB. Just maybe a little more predelay on it.

thanks for the comments so far.

We are really trying for the "this is how we sound live" in our head vibe.

Chris- thanks for the suggestions. I'll take them into consideration.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

From one Indie/ShoeGaze songwriter/producer to another...

I know it's shoegaze. But the vocals could probably use a tad less reverb...Otherwise sounds nice... Love the sounds... What kind of hats are those? What did you use to get the crazy delays with the guitar in the right channel? Love that kind of stuff!

If you snag that reverb down a little bit it will bring the vocal up in the mix too, it's a bit hidden. But maybe you like that in vocals. I don't like them sitting on top of the mix, but I would love to hear just a tad more of them in this mix.

Kick is fairly hidden in the mix, or perhaps it's supposed to be that way. Rocks otherwise!

A really nice sound from a sonic perspective. I don't now exactly what your intentions are for this track but I offer my thoughts anyway. The first 12 seconds it seems that this track is going to kick ass. But then that guitar takes over . I feel like the vocals are a little too similar to Morrisey/Smiths for their own good. Think the vocalist has got to think about that some. Also the track feels a little dated with all the guitar delay and layering etc. This track could really use a really amazing moment too to push it over the edge. The cadence at 3:43 is almost there but it's too little too late. Why didn't you treat the end of the first chorus the same with that great melodic surprise on the F# chord?

Heehee, that's shoegaze for you my friend.... Delay, layering= shoegaze... It's a style.. It was done on purpose... Notice the title of the post!

Yes. Of course. With respect, I was being diplomatic. Just my thoughts. Maybe there is more of a scene for this kind of thing than of what I am aware. But as I said I am not aware of the bands intentions and goals.

Wow, a flurry of posts since I last checked!

I know what you mean in regards to the reverb on the vox. I tend to go for less and the singer pushes for more We usually go back and forth on this.. You should have heard how much was on the track before we "compromised".

Thanks for the complements on the tones. I'd have to check with the drummer on what hihats were used. I'm not remembering at the moment.
The Guitar delay was mainly created by the guitar player. He uses several delays along with a bunch of other crazy things in his pedal board and runs (2) AC30s in stereo to create some pretty neat effects (IMHO)..

I have since brought up the kick a bit since the original sound file was put up. I'll try to put up an updated example soon.

Yes, the sound of the track is intentional to fit the style of music.
Believe it or not- this track is pretty much what we sound like live. 3 piece band + wall of sound+ reverb drenched vocals= us
Its not for everyone, but its what we sound like

"funnel cloud": hi hats

The hi-hats I used on this recording are Zildjian New Beat 14". They're from the late 1960s-early 1970s as near as I can tell; the engraved stamps are pretty worn, and I was told they were 60s hats when I purchased them used from a local (and trusted) music store around 1992. The recording is a fairly accurate representation of how they sound live.

thanks for the kind comments and input regarding our music!
cheers,

Good song!! I agree with the reverb comments...the kick needs to be tighter...it seems to get lost in the mix. Was this recorded to a click track? some of the drum fills seem a bit rushed to me.
