| Punk/Modern Rectifier PLEASE LISTEN! Hey there, this is the very first quick roughmix of one of the songs of a band I'm working on currently. it's supposed to sound like a bastard between modern punk and hardcore...think Pennywise as a reference or so. I know, this is probably still a bit too "metal" sounding for punk but I really didn't want to artificially create a "shitty" sound. I tried to achieve a compromise beween "natural" and "modern" (Link see post# 10) gear: Drums Mic Pre converters Snare t/B sm57 API 3124+ RME Multiface Kick Audix D6 Safe Sound P1 RME Multiface Toms Audix D2 Octopre LE Octopre LE Hats sm7 Octopre LE Octopre LE Overheads km184 API 3124+ Apogee Rosetta AD Plugins:Waves API and MH CHannelstrip Guitars: Fender Strat EMG 85-->808--->2ch Recto--->Engl 4x12 v30--->2x sm57--->Api 3124+--->Apogee Rosetta AD....Plugins: Zero post-processing cept HP@60Hz and LP@13.4k Bass: Harley Benton neckthru (cheapo)--->Sansamp...Plugins:Waves API Vox: Sm7---->SPL Goldmike--->RME ADI8 Plugins: Waves API, Cubase4 Delay and Doubler thanks for listening

| listening on a laptop.... sounds good....that drummer isn't hitting many toms- if you haven't already, I'd go back and erase the non-tom parts on the track The bass don't sound bad, but looking at the gear list, it seems to be the weakest link Great job on your part |

| Gear Head | Well, I'm not a pro but I'd change/try a few things: - I miss the bass. I dont feel much of a bottom except the kick. the bass might need some lowend (might be my monitors though ;) ) - I'd lowcut the guitars a bit more to make space for the bass and to lose a bit of the "metal" character - would probably push the drums slightly (mostly snare but I think a more aggressive style of drums would fit the music) Just some suggesstions. If these dont work, stick to what you got, I like it :) |

| If you don't mind I'd like to ask a question - you recorded the rhythm guitar with two mics and a single take? I just wanted to know whether you did this, or maybe used two different takes, or maybe time / pitch shifted the 2nd version to help with separation? How did you configure the SM57s to achieve the separation you have here? Really appreciate any info you can give :) Liked the sound you got out of those guitars and the drums too.. |

the guitars are doubletracked, one take on each side (2 mics each)- there is no substitute for doubletracking

| Gear Head | Had another listen. Your changes were very subtle (at least to my ears) but I like it better somehow. You could have changed it more drastically to my taste but thats just a personal thing. One thing that irritates me (also in the first version) is the snare reverb. Its kind of distracting in the intro because of its amount. The amount fits well when the rest of the mix comes up though. Id probably try to lower it in the intro (and the break passage where its kind of alone again). You could also try to shorten it in the named passages. I dont know if its actually better but its worth a try I guess. Keep up the good work! |

| in my opinion the bass guitar has a little too much highend. I know that for this type of music the bass typically has a lot of highend, but it may be excessive on this mix. Rather than add low end to compensate, I would just lower the highs and raise the volume of the bass. The verb on the snare may be a little excessive also. It may be exactly what you want though. those are just my thoughts.

| thanks for your tips! I startd from scratch again with a different song, actually I like the mix better now: Calling For A Revolution (the end is to be crossfaded into the next song, hence the length..)

| Sounds good to me (as a listener only - I don't usually make or mix non-electronic music). |
