Hello Gearslutzer's...
Would you be so kind as to give me your ears and your opinion.
I am making some decisions on my tracking room and would love your thoughts...

1. Wood floor/soft walls
2. wood floor/drywall walls
3. Concrete floor/soft walls

For me the wooden floor with the soft walls sounds best.

+1 Wooden Floors soft walls..

I also liked the Concrete / Soft as well, but the kick cut through too much... maybe nice to have the kick padded a bit by the wood floor naturally?

The drywall limits what you can do in the mix later IMHO.

I like the snare on the wood floor and soft walls but I like the hats and kick with the concrete floor.

If you are going for a "tight" sound then I think any would work. I prefer concrete/soft. What size is the room? It would be nice if you could make it more live and then use gobos to tame.

The room size is: 18'=L 10'=W and 7 1/2'=H...
I tended to like the concrete myself but maybe only cuz the kick sounded beefier...I do want neutrality.

What was in the room when you recorded the examples? It sure sounds more dead than an empty room. The ceilings are bit low so you might have to go for a more tight close mic'd sound. However, don't forget just because you can put your OH 10' in the air you still have room to put it 10' to the front of the kit.

Nothing was really in the room...and I like your comment about putting OH 10' in front of the kit...hmmmmmm
