Dude, if you're in Seattle. This band (Wide Eye Panic) plays in that area quite a bit. They are definately worth watching. They put on an amazing show.

Guitar amp chains:
3D Tonewoods guitar (AMAZING!!!)> Marshall JMP-1 >Marshall EL34 100/100 pwr amp> Marshall 1960A w/ Vintage 30's

Schecter Diamond> Mesa Boogie Dual rectifier> Marshall 1960A (same cab / micing)

Guitar recording chain:
SM57x2 (fredman style) about 1"off grill, and near center of cone> Seventh Circle A12 preamps> MOTU 2408

Guitar post processing:
Multiband compressor (SlimShow C3 set to FIR), with only low band enabled, 6dB reduction around 120Hz.
EQ: (I used Voxengo EssEQ) Reduced a bit of the 8 and 15k bands. Not too much, just enough to tame any fizzyness.

Bein avid metal fan I like the mix. The band sounds too much like System of a Down, but that has nothing to do with the nice mix.

Impressive mix, love the guitars and seperation of the drums (I have to use drumagog to get that type of seperation). The band sounds great too although I was a little disappointed with the drum arrangement during the break down at 2:07, it was very "godsmack" of the drummer to do a four count on the high-hat. I'm interested to know what plugin or hardware you use to finalize the overall mix if you don't mind sharing, I would really appreciate that.

I went from arms crossed during my first listen and transcended to just being a fan- well done


I did notice the 4 count on the hat, can we erase that without affecting the following sounds? Not a big deal though

I'm also a kick drum freak so I wouldn't just a touch more volume or click in that department- again just preference at this point- it all sounds killer as is!

Great recording/mix.

Not diggin the vocalist. Hits his pitches but is kinda weak IMO. Put a strong vocalist on that track and I can envision it on the radio.

Hmmm Okay from a mix perspective its good, actually above average, for this style seperation is key.. Often times the vocals get completely buried in both mixes, there is no sparkle to really punch the vox through, often Ill use a puncher on vocals that are like this, or compress the crap out of them. The bass line is weak, you really want a growl for the bass lines here. It sounds a bit thin to me, mind you that could just be the fact that this is not mastered... Because the 80 and below region is only very softly there, and for this song style pumping its intending to really draw in the listener. The drums are actually the weakest link, actually, way below average, so dont listen to what others have said, they need a lot more work... They need clarity, punch, kick, and oomph and right now, they are only slightly sizzling... try a sub mix of the drums and patch them through a pultec
But thats just an opinion....

Drake, I had a listen to a couple of tunes on your myspace page and, no offense, but I am not sure that you are qualified to make such pointed criticisms. I know I'm not.

all Im saying is that the mix is thin....
Upgrade your speakers there bud.... Im monitoring on a Adam s3's with an infinity sub set up, and I wasnt feeling pushed as much as I should for this style of music! Besides if I really want to get technical here, the mix is pushed, Squashed with no dynamics, loudness was its only purpose as everything is piled in the 900- to 2.5 range, left right center pans were used too much, and its pushing damn near -8.2 db, thats just way too loud and tells me that either the Mastering engineer got Limiter happy or the mixer piled... Which gives the vocals no room to breath ... the guitars sound great, the track over all is good, but great is the point here. The bass line needs to growl for this style and the vox need to be clear enough, and at this point it seems a bit wooly to me....

No, its my work, and it sounds good to me... My mp3's are streaming at 128 since I have the complete album, so I think you can get my point... this is 256 VBR so it should be damn near CD quality, but not hearing it....

Now if you would like to give me a review thats fine, I didnt ask for one

i'd listen to some system of a down as a ref and try and get the vocals in there with a bit more conviction. the guy who said the vocalist was a bit weak is sort of on to something. very good other than that.

as for drakewire.his comments are as odd and as uninformed as always

Really good work man. Some of the better heavy guitars sounds I've heard!

I'd also like to hear a bit more kick and low to low-mid from the bass guitar. This mix is guitar-centric (You a guitar player by chance ) but that's cool... I like it sometimes when one element sticks out a little more than it should. Gotta have some tension, eh?


Overall this is a really really solid mix. If I was the band I'd be stoked!
