Help Trying to Make These Vocals Sit Better

I've spent God knows how many hours trying to make the vocal sit well in the mix & can't seem to find the right combination. In your guys' opinion, what does it sound like the song's missing? More master compression? Using stock Garageband (I'm getting Logic at the end of the month)plugs definitely doesn't help the matter since no 3rd party developers seem to support Leopard.

& yes, I know that the hook is copyrighted - I'm just using this song to test/compare my quality & not profiting off of it. Also, the ad-libs aren't panned & the main verse still has a few rough edges since I'm just concerned w/ making the vocal sit well.

Appreciate it.

Sounds like proximity effect to me....
how close to what type of mic did you have this fellow (or yourself) singing?

Compress the living snot out of it and it will be just fine. (this is one of the few times that this is actualy the correct answer)

Only 2 or 3 inches, but I'm also using an SM7B. I know you're basically supposed to chew the mic when recording, but I constantly get pops and/or tinny sounds randomly throughout when trying.

uhh
you're not supposed to chew the mic when recording...

2-3 inches is a bit closer than I'd be doing on a cardiod mic...you'll get a shitload of proximity effect and that is seemingly what you don't want....

i'd be more like 8-12 inches away....

SM7's are different than 99% of mics b/c of their low output. If you stand 8-12 inches away from it, it's going to sound like faint screams coming from a cave.

their low output has nothign to do with patterns and pickup....

you just have to use a preamp with sufficient gain to run that microphone....

I think the voice needs EQ very badly.

Yes,

Compress the living snot out of it but:
Use an LA2A for that. The UAD one works just as well as the hardware.
It won't sound compressed even though you are smashing it if you use the 2A. The LA2A has made vocals come, sit and stay for years now.

EQ and compression

I'd say... cut about 3 db at 300 hz , and add 3 sb at 3khz.... and compress with that la2a..... then eq to taste after that..... maybe that will do it....

can't listen right now but 2-3" seems very close to me. I would be shooting for about 6"... maybe a bit more.

I dig the low output concern, but even with my RNP I can get enough gain to sing a softer song 6" out.

Good luck.

Scoop out the goo, smash it shitless, add some 5k, after.

And what's the deal with the synth line chewing up the scenery?
