my first request

Ok, I set up a myspace page a few weeks ago to see how it's done and what all the fuss is about. I did a little scratch track and posted it and I'm wondering if you guys would take a listen. I'm not looking for mixing, playing or mastering advice. I'm just trying to see how the overall fidelity and tone compare to what's out there. I'm thinking my converters suck.

I had one version posted and my buddy said the guitar needed to come way up. I kind of agreed and posted a new one but now I think the guitar is too loud. Oh, well. And this is pre drums so don't tell me about loops. I used the drums in cubase as a metronome. They'll be gone soon.

I don't mean to sound like a know it all but it seems like every time I make a post it gets way off track and people start answering questions I never asked. I'm just trying to head that off. I'm looking for opinions like:
  • sounds like it was done by a drunken third grader with cotten in his ears
  • you are the greatest engineer that ever lived
  • you suck
  • you are wonderful
and so on. Not how I need to take a recording class or change my strings. And I know if I read this I would copy and paste answer 1 & 3 above 'cause I'm kind of an a-hole anyway. That's why I feel so at home here!

Thanks in advance guys. MySpace.com - Otis Keith Watkins - Murfreesboro, Tennessee - Blues / R&B / Funk - www.myspace.com/otiskeithwatkins

Hell, I think it's fine. Guitar is not too loud to me.

Hard for me to judge your converters via myspace, but it's as you described, and the blend of everything is fine. Let us know when you do different drums.

Come up the road and visit sometime.

I'd love to vist, man. Just send me a google map to cloud nine.

Hey thanks for answering the question I asked, and I know what you mean about being able to tell anything from myspace. I think that's what my hint is. I can't tell a nickel's worth of difference between 128k and 320k mp3 or 44.1/16 wav when I record myself. What's perplexing is I could tell a difference when I copy a CD to hard drive and have either a wav file or convert it to 128k mp3. I could tell a difference between burning a CD with WMA or Roxio. I could even tell a difference between Cubase LE and Cubase 4.1. Either my ears or playing tricks or my converters make everything sound almost exactly the same. Is my theory making any sense?

It makes sense, and I have no idea why it is. Not much experience with direct converter comparisons here.

Nice looking place. I work in Hermitage. I'll drop you a line one day soon and see what your schedule looks like.
