I love the timing on the drums. How did you program it? I think its the shaker thats moving it the most for me. Sounds loose but right in the pocket. Any tips?

thanks....the cabasa (shaker) was just played live (recorded in stereo IIRC)......the drums were programed without quantize......i'm not so happy with the groove, although i like the way the kick works with the bass......i think i ran the final mix to 1/2 inch for some "smudge"

Hmmm. what don't you like about the groove? I hear you on the live percussion. I've spent years and years trying to get it right and now I just record real shakers live, problem solved.

How do you enter in your drums (with no quantize) MPC pads? Kit?

Jesse....IIRC, i just programed in the basic beat on a keyboard.....then went thru the track, adding or taking away kicks/snares, and knudging them around so the groove changes slightly every bar.

I dunno, the groove could be better....i can hear better now what wasn't clear to me a couple of years ago.

BTW, it was mixed on a Mackie 1604VLZ Pro

If I had any critique of the mix I would say it seemed a bit on the clean side. Especially the snare/clap could have been crunchy/dirtier to add some contrast.

Jesse, you're right......but i was going for a sort of clean, hi-fi'ish electronic sound.....totally different from Jay-Dee and that school....i was trying to be sort of jazzy/deep/clean ..also, 'cause a lot of my sounds were recorded live (including the hand-clap), it doesn't have that "re-sampled 20 times" naastyness....you live and learn!

I'll post another mix later that's more filthy!

I think for a clean mix like that the groove would have to be tightened up a bit, for that nu jazz feel. So maybe thats what you were hearing as well (groove-wise)

Anyways keep me updated.
