| Lives for gear | Something I'm sort of proud of... (tear it apart!) I posted a link a while ago but dont think anyone noticed.. Please go to www.myspace.com/ohsleeper and check the songs out. Of course theres the myspace streaming which sounds like ass.. Its all tracked and mixed in PTHD with a pair of chandler tone controls and API pres on the master insert. Sonically I think I've done some stuff that technically sounded better, but I really like the overall tone and feel of everything. Theres a lot of subtle delays and effects all over the place.. Let me know what you think.. (I'm mainly looking for constructive criticism so dont be nice!) |

| Lives for gear | I just want to hear other peoples opinions. When you're too connected to something you cant hear what it really sounds like.. Theres so many times when I'll obsess forever about a certain part of the mix that doesnt sound right, when the actual problem is something totally different thats masking something else. For instance on this certain recording I thought the guitars were lacking some clarity so I brightened them up a bit and now listening back I think I should have just cut a touch of low mid and turned them up more so theyd be just as clear, but no so fizzy. The choice of cymbals for the project were totally wrong.. too big and lacking any definition. I also should have miked them closer so I could compress them a bit more. In this mix the overhead compressor was only catching the snare and couldnt level out the cymbal volume since the snare in the overheads was too loud. I dont think the mixes suck but they could be a lot better.. Just wanting an outside ear to tell me what they hear.. |

| Even with the myspace crap sound, I can tell it was well done. Props to you man. I'd like to know a little bit more about the gear used on these tracks if you don't mind? -ScottyD |

| Gear Head | I can sort of understand what you are saying about the cymbals...there could be a little more definition... But i do have to say that the OVERALL mix is very good. Not that my opinions are expert, but with just listening to on a mac g4's speakers to a compressed file... sounds awesome man. Im a huge fan of good drum sounds and I would love to know what type of cymbals those were as well as specifically what chain you ran each drum through if you have the time. Great Mix, great band, I'll be going to best buy on Tuesday:) |

| Sounds dope to me, not my cup of tea for listening. Although Im a natural at mixing that stuff. Usually how its happens. But I enjoyed it definitely, for that genre of music and the mix together Id give it an "A" for sure! Keep up the fantastic work!

| Lives for gear | I'm not in the band. I just produced and mixed the record. The record comes out tuesday. Itll be interesting to see how it does. Also on tuesday I have another record I did ( www.myspace.com/agonyscene ) that should do pretty well. Thanks for all the positive comments but I'm really here to get some constructive criticism. What do you think needs to happen to take the mixes up to a higher level? In about 6 months I should be in my new proffesionally designed control room that I'm hoping will make tracking and mixing much easier. My current room is a nightmare to mix in and Im never happy with the tones I get in tracking. The new room should be about as good as it gets acoustically.. Hopefully it makes a massive difference because I'll be broke for the next 6 months getting it built. |

| Hey Andreas, I randomly saw the 'planet red' screen name and found this post. I'm a huge Scarlet fan and also love that Oh Sleeper record. I know this is an old thread now, but I'm wondering if we could hear more about the process and your new room. I've been loving a lot of your work lately. |

I say, ask an engineer you know and respect instead of asking here. You'll get better results. Unfortunately, most busy engineers are real gentlemen (unlike your average gearslut) and will probably just tell you it sounds great. But that's OK. It kind of does. Trust yourself. Give yourself some time away from it. You'll look back and know what was right and what was wrong. You just have to realize that you can hear as well as anyone else in the world. Once you honestly feel that way, it will become true... Trust your judgement! At the end of the day, your judgment pays the bills. It's the reason people will hire you. They're not going to hire you for someone else's judgment, for chrissakes!

| Lives for gear | I am no metal fan but this is my synopsis: Most metal lacks emotion and just comes across as noise. Actually talents bands like the deftones can inflict anger and fear, but this shit is a joke But hey it looks like the band has a following so good luck to u. |

| Personally, I like it. You have to understand the emotion of the music and the intent of the lyrics to get it. They sound a tad bit like Norma Jean to me. Sounds good. Are you mixing Underoath's new album? Chris Dudley said CLA wasn't mixing this time around. |

| David Ben is mixing the new UO record. He posts around here, I'm sure he'll be willing to talk about it when it comes out. |

| Lives for gear | Thanks for the nice comments.. From what I understand things are starting to go really well for the band. I'm out in Indiana right now working on a record.. Its my first time really working in a decent studio for an extended period of time. I feel like I've just learned a ton. I want to go back and remix everything I've done.. My mixroom at home is TERRIBLE and unfortunately thats where I have to do all my work So all my stuff has some pretty stupid stuff going on in the low end (which I havent been able to pinpoint til now) which messes up the balance of everything else resulting in harsh muddy mixes..I cant wait to get into a new room and relearn everything. |
