please help me improve

Hi, I´m practicing in mixing on by working on a song that followed a mix practice dvd i bought.

I would be wery happy if you could give me any advice in how to improve. I have been adding eq´s, comps and different stuff to the rough tracks. I have also done some editing.
I have been experimenting in akward panning, with the rytm section.
Thanks for using your time :)

Everything sounds decent... You've got a great deal of top end of the spectrum... a good dehisser will clean that up though or you could always eq certain frequencies to kind of tighten up the mix... Compression should be used only when needed (remember that) it appears that every track has a form of compression on it... Less is more most of the time when mixing... The bass seemed center at least to me, so thats a great start. Bass frequencies tend to set the perceived idea of the song so its a great idea to keep it dead center....
Over all pretty good work, since as you put it, this is a beginning mix. Just learn to work on those top frequencies above 7k and smear them out a bit or remove them all together in cases of say for example a Bass Guitar, everything above 5k should usually be cut to give a clearer bottom end. Guitar everything should usually be cut below 80-100 to give a clearer top end....

Mixing is about give and take, if you take from one frequency your going to change another.....

Over all, good job.

You know, i actually just recently got a copy of that same dvd... I'm not a huge fan of it, the fella doesn't really explain much that he does... he kinda just does it, or mentions a reason, but I don't feel he covers anything out of context of the ONE song they go over... Plus those raw tracks are some of the best engineered tracks I've heard in a while, so he really didn't have THAT much to do... Then again I haven't finished watching it yet either so ignore my opinon...lol

Maybe I'm just being a dick...

The mix sounds pretty solid, sounds a bit loose on the lows, and I feel some of the cymbals are a touch harsh. So really the suggestions by the fella above are GREAT for cleaning up both of those!

Thanks alot for the advise :) this issue with eq´ing is something I´m strugling with. I have the same opinion on compressing as you I just tryed to give this piece a litle bit more but somehow it seperates the instruments to much so I´ll try to ballance it more.
Actually ryanojohn, I also don´t like the advise he´s giving on the dvd, I found it a bit useless and boring. I saw it once and didnt saw it again after that, but took it up again the other day and practiced on it. Even though the music isnt my best cup of tea it´s ok practice :)
Thanks again

I have been using your advise and I have come up with this mix, it should be a bit more cleaned up but somehow it seems I´m having trouble with the mids. Maybe it´s just difficult to hear on my Projectmix :)
