OK, Try this one (live and die)

I posted an earlier version of this in "Lend me your ears". Got some great feedback and went to work. Stayed up 'til 7:30 this morning re-doing some guitar tracks. Sting has left the buiding. Enter U-2. I still don't have a "lead guitar" track per se, but maybe I don't need one. What do you think? Thanks Lee and Mario for the comments on the first draft.

Well, ok,
How 'bout the guitars. Obviously a ton of delay on them. Does anyone think I over did it? Does anyone care? (sniff) Think I'll go eat some worms...

The drums don't feel that "warm" to me (ok I know nice wording;)
I would like to hear them more "analog" - If that makes any sense.
Quite a ton of delays on the guit. Perhaps a little too much, but who knows.

Cool song Jo

IT'S ALIVE!!!

I hear where you're coming from Studjo. I think maybe I'm a bit too liberal with the compressors on the drums. They're a bit flat (at least the snare is). I'll keep that one in mind on the next bounce. I'm not entirely thrilled with the drum sound, and comments like yours will keep me from settling for it, if you know what I mean. Guitars got tracked in the wee hours WITH the delay (pod, shhhh), but I think I can tone them down a little somehow, I'll check it out.

Thanks much

Jon

i agree the guitars are lil' too wet... at times the (new) guitar ideas sound focused and at times it sounds like you're just jamming, ( maybe a more constructed part a la andy summers would work? ), i think in this particular tune everything would benefit from a "less is more" approach, I'd try to play for the song more, i bring that up mainly because the guitar distracted me from the vocal at times, i kinda missed the acoustic guitar too ...

all very subjective of course, everything i typed is just my opinion, hope it helps

I want to thank you folks for taking the time to give me some feedback. I toned down the "echo madness" guitars so that they're more of a background part, and I've changed the bass line up so it doesn't get so repetitive towards the end. Also brought some of the BG parts more toward the front of the mix. I also did some stuff with the drums so that they have a little more life to them (hopefully). I'll definatetly need a solo guitar now that the other parts are in the BG. Anyway, the next time I post this tune it'll be what I consider finished, and I'll put it up in the other forum. I'm still waiting on the guitar player...
Anybody feel like they could lay down a tasty lead track to this bad boy? (synth or guitar). I don't know if it's cool to ask such a thing, but, hell I'm not too proud.

I know there's mucho talent lurking about this forum, and I'll bet I could make an mp3 lead work (to save on bandwidth) Let me know if you're up for a little experimentation.

Thanks,

Jon

this song sounds scary close to "pets" by porno for pyros and It sounds like the band is very aware of that. Other than that the mix sounds great. Production kinda has a late 80's early 90's crowded house vibe going on which is not a bad thing IMO.

Thanks for the feedback rynugz,

I'm glad that you refer to the song in a "band" context, cuz it's all me and overdubs, but I'd rather not have it sound that way. I've never heard any porno for pyros, but you've piqued my interest and I'll see if I can find something on them. Thanks for the mix compliment. It's still a work in progress, hopefully it will be done this week...

did you play the drum kit on this or is it loops or what? Nice job either way.

Porno for pyro's is what perry ferrell did after jane's addiction broke up. "pets" was their hit and probably my favorite PFP song.

The vocal doesn't fit in with the mix right. It needs some different fx.

Me on accoustic drums. My booth is small so it's hard to get any kind of ambience (worth using anyway), but they beat the hell out of the electronic kit I was using. Faeflora, thanks for popping in. Vocal is me trying to imitate someone who can sing and will be replaced soon.

Actually if I were mixing it, I'd dry up everything else and wetten the vocal.
