Recording better vocals

Here is a sample of the vocal sound I am currently getting. I am using an AKG C-414 B-ULS into an M-audio Firewire 410. The vox are done in a bedroom 8x10x12 with carpet floors. How can I make this better?

A little reverb and some high shelf might do it.

A nicer way might be to face the wall or a wooden surface to get some reflections.

BTW check out the OMNI or figure8 patterns on the 414! They might just give you what you need.

Hi there,
The Vox sounds like it was recorded in a small room with low 8ft ceilings. Experiment with recording in an environment with reflections such as a tiled shower. You'll notice that most people think they sound better when singing in a bathroom. Its partly true because of the natural reverb created by the tile. You might also wanna try walking around your house and singing. Listen for places where you think you sound the best. Then set up a mic and experiment with backing off the mic 6 inches to a foot and half to pick up more/less room ambience.
Overall, I think your solo'd dry vox would benefit from some ambience.

Hope this helps!

I'm not a pro, but the voice could use some more brilliance and presence. If you have got, try some tube plugins like magneto or vintage warmer. Then it might be nice to use an exciter. The vocals in pop and electro usually are much more brilliant. I added a file, where I just sang in some popular karaoke stuff on my G4. I used an AT4035 SV with Emagic a62m. I heavily compressed, limited and excited the track and put a high quality reverb on it (Emagic space designer or Altiverb). I just recorded it in front of my MAC without any special room design. I think that should work for preproduction.
