Old mix, but I still like it. And you?

Hi!

This is from a band I did some albums with (recording/mixing/mastering/co-producing).

Tell me what you think!

Peter

klingt echt geil

Great song, great band, great production, great performance, love it. Are we allowed to know who the band is? I'd go and buy the CD.

...would I be to out of line to say that it sounds like a Gwen Stefani type tune? That is a great mix, love the vocal sound especially. Can you give more details on the drum set up in regards to micing? I am researching what people are doing and am curious as to your micing techniques for drums if I may ask. Thanks for sharing!

Great work!! Every aspect of this production is amazing. Why isn't this getting any radio play? Are the performers not cute enough?

The bandīs name is Tunes for the takinī (www.tftt.de).
Unfortunately they never got signed - thatīs Germany... :-((

You may be able to order their CDs from their website (or from me - Iīll check with them).
There are some more songs to download from their site, too.

The above linked song is "Winterīs Child" from the EP "Welcome".

Iīve heard that name before, but I donīt know where to put it...

The recording is from 1999/2000 so I canīt remember everything...
AFAIR the vocals were tracked with a BPM TB94 through a focusrite ISA-215. Drum mikes I think I used:
RE-20 on kick, SM-57 on snare, KM-84 on hihat, SM-57s on toms, BPM TB94 as overheads, there may have been room mikes, if so then they were Milab VM44 (?) and U89 as MS-pair.
All the EQ, compression and other FX you hear was done in Logic Audio with ProTools Mix+ and TDM plug-ins + Lexicon PCM90/80/NuVerb. Conversion was done with two 888-24s.
It was mixed "in the box", no external summing/processing.
Mastering was done in ProTools.
Regarding drums I remember fighting with a fu**cking loud hihat that was bleeding like hell into all other drum-mikes...
I still hear that on the mix...

If you have further questions, please ask.

Peter

You bet they are! But weīre doing this in Germany and the industry is absolutely NOT interested in that kind of music here. :-((

For those interested: hereīs another one from the same band.
This oneīs from 2001. Whatīs interesting about it is the band was tracked on 8-track cassette tape and only the vocals were done in my studio (Neumann U47).
Mixing was done in Logic/ProTools as described above.

Hey Merlin,

Thanks for the reply and all the info. Gwen Stefani sings for a band called No Doubt, relatively popular here in the US. This lady reminds me somewhat of her. Nice work as I said before.

Oops, No Doubt - I should have known that! ;-)
But no, I donīt think Cathi, the singer, was that much influenced by her.

Wow. Great stuff. Good job, buddy. You make me feel like the fat guy with the water wings and nose plug fixin' to do a cannonball.

This is definitely a swan dive.

Exelent !! This work just goes to shows you that it's not about the gear but who's behind it (and great songs of course !). Keep up the good work

Here are two new ones from the same band for the interested.

"Low" features a guest on vocals, "Here" features the new singer (and a guest player on Pedal Steel Guitar).
The sloppy playing on "Here" is intentional. ;-)

Who guesses the vocal mikes used? ;-))

Regards,
Peter

something about the snare bugs me.. guitar production is great and something about the vocal reverb is a little too cheesy IMO.
