A couple of new recordings

I did this at home in my basement using a pair of atm450 and a Shure Beta 90 on drums. fretless bass and baritone guitars direct. I sang the parts into a SM7. Emu 1820M, Onyx 800r, Nuendo 2.2, Waves.

The next song I used Groove Agent and a Studio Projects C1 on my acoustic. I need to work on the acoustic sound.

Any comments would be appreciated.

everything sounds very clean and open. both could use a bumb at about 100hz on the bass guitar. great tones though.

I agree with spandex, there's no meat in the low end and it could really use some girth and phatten it up a bit. the bass sounds like my el'cheapo crapola Fender Squier. Almost the exact same tone. OK for sketching but I wouldnt want to commit to it. Other than that, you have some nice tones man. Nice balance on the mixes.

First of all thanks for the advice. Second, you have a good ear, the first track has a cheap Ibanez fretless bass, and the second track is my cheap mexican precision bass.

wow man that is some great stuff. Great job.

Just for fun try this on the second song.

1) Put a little more compression on the vocal than increase the verb just a little to make it sound "bigger".

2) The snare is the driving force in this song. Maybe if you compressed it (just a little) and increased the volume it would help stand up a little more, which should drive the song in return.

All and all though it sounds great how it is. I am just a tweak head.

Glenn

That first song is cool - mellow and light.

Right on about the bass though - bump the 100-110 hz, maybe even some of the lower sub frequencies as the kick drum isn't very deep, its more punchy. with that said, I would say boost the kick up a little bit, make sure it sits in the 80-90hz range. Following the vibe of that track, it would seem to make the lower bass frequencies more audible than anything lower than 80hz on the kick.

so maybe boost a little bit of 60-70 hz on the bass, leave space carved for the kick. I would avoid boosting the bass over level. Boosting frequencies can be a bad idea if the actual bass track really doesn't have any lower frequencies to begin with, its hard to tell with an MP3.

I would also spread the guitar a bit, there isn't much of a stereo field. It would sound awesome especially because the track is pretty minimal. Maybe not go for a hard right/left panned thing, but I would do something.

I would work on the vocal compression a bit more (not necessarily compress more, but work with different attack and release settings), add some (or a little more) pre-delay on the main vox reverb. On the backing vox I would maybe change the EQ a bit and dip a little of the 900-1000 hz area, add more compression, reverb with less pre-delay. I can't promise my vocal idea will work, but I think the track could be straightened up a bit and it would be really good.

Just speaking for myself, I'm releived to finally hear something original here at GS and not more of the same sophomoric shit being passed off as music under the guise of an excuse to use gear!! Bravo! Just keep it up and keep evolving! You're an artist first, the song and performance is FIRST order of importance, the gear will fall into second place as needed...these songs would work with a Samson mic and a Presonus Tube Pre.........keep it up....best of luck...looking forward to hearing more
