New Hardcore/Metal Project

So I just finished Basic tracks on an EP for a band and did a little pre vocal mix. Let me know what you think.

Great mix - very clean; the musicians are really, really tight. Spill the beans on how you recorded them; what gear all the way around?

Drums where tracked with the normal assortment of mics. D112 on kick 57 top and bottom snare 421's on toms and floors. The snare is blended with three samples. The bass is a Fender Jazz bass direct into Avalon U5. I used for the first time the SVT sowtware from IK and am really Surprised at how well it emulates. Guitars are pretty crazy. There is 2 tracks od Boogie Recto with an Les Paul with and EMG81 panned stereo. Then there is 2 more tracks Same guitar running through Randall RM4 with the XTC mod. All the Soloish Tracks are running through my Custom made Fatboy head. All guitars were running into an Avatar 2x12 cab with Vintage 30's. 57 and e609 on Speakers about 1" away from cone. The cab sat in my home made iso box. Used UA 8110 pre on all the boogie and Randal tracks. Pacifica on Fatboy tracks. Nothing to ground breaking on the recording process.

This was a quick ITB mix to give the singer the tracks to practice to. I may mix most of this OTB/ITB meaning no mixer but all outboard gear. Then send it to Tape for the final. But if it aint broke I may not fix it.

Very cool band! I dig the music! It sound a little like As I Lay Dying and that's good! :)

Cool mix... but i think the guitar are a little muddy when they are playing some fast riffs on low strings! It would be nice if there would be more definition. But all-in-all it's a cool mix for the singer to practice!

Only thing that gets to my ears is that you might have little bit too much distortion on the guitars. And maybe something weird on 500-1500hz on bass...

But greatsounding mix, though...

That's wild, but I do run into people who I've talked to here all the time! Seems like you're putting that gear to good use; I checked out the studio and it's looking quite snazzy. Everyone has NS10s but me...

kick could be like a db or half db down and the bass could be maybe louder, I just try to hear it and its not there as much as I would like to be, but that of course is just be. Otherwise sounds professional. I love the U5.

What did you use for overheads?

its a very nice mix.. but... :)
the guitars have tooo much gain.. its gets too muddy.
you really dont need al that gain when tracking 4 dubs...
and i would personnaly give it a little more cymbals..
that kinda keeps it more together... you get realy focused on guitars
after a while... and then it starts to feel like the instruments dont stick together...
but other than that its very very nice :)

I like the big blanket effect that you get from all the guitars. my only only advice is to put your more active guitar parts on the outsides of your mix.
The cymbles probably could use a little more life. They seem very distant and dull like the drummer isnt hitting them very hard.

A lot of it sounds good. The rhythm guitar sounds really weak to me, though. It's there, but like during the parts with the palm muted guitar and the drums playing between the mutes, it just doesn't hit you in the chest like it should.

Great mix but to me:
- the drums sound way to electronic, I mean, some rolls don't even sound like a drummer, but sound programed drums.
- not enought cymbals
- too much gain on guitars
- some guitars could be tighter if you wanted to get picky (this won't make the song sound bad at all, it's just a detail)
What drumkit was that? what kind of pres did you use!

like it, sounds like it will be fun to mix. in flamesish and very metal, the gain could come down and have the same effectual power though. whatever, it's metal, dime that gain up and lay waste
