This is badly recorded but.....

Hi, I've got a new track that I quickly recorded (out of time and badly played!) in a small room in my house with one mic on the vocals and guitar (directed more at my voice) however I really like the feel of the track and when I've tried to re record it I can't get that sound back. Any suggestion as to how you would record this track to get that balance of feel/quality

Thumbs up great!!

warmer, this track is quite exquisite and beautiful...
i wouldn't say it was badly recorded; it sounds like Damien Rice's work!!

stunning.

cheers.

Why would you want to do another take ? The voice sounds beauiful. The guitar (s?) are a bit out of tune but that's not disturbing.
It will be hard to replace the core of your mix because all the other things are overdubbed to this take.
I don't understand why you recorded the strings etc. if you weren't satisfied with the vocal take.

Anyway it's beautiful, don't change a thing i would say.

Cheers,

Hans

Cheers for the comments, yeah I don't think I could really replace any of it, it would have to be a complete re record:-( I really like the vocals but they are recorded with the guitar! The strings and xylophone are just samples so I put them on quickly to see how it would flesh out.

I think it is just a little too lo fi? so really do want to record it again. All my attempts thus far don't sound as honest though. Aghhh if I'd known I was going to get the feel right first time I would have thought about the timing and tuning more before I started.

I know the feeling.

Tell you what, though. I listen to a lot of stuff here that is heavily produced, squashed, massaged, cut, pasted and made to sound 'just perfect'.
This tune is real...the real thing.
Music.

Go ahead and do it over but make sure you save what you have.

Well after hearing everyones feedback I'm not going to re record it myself. I think if I try then i will not be able to help thinking about the track and everything too much, when I've got some time I'm going to get someone else to record me and let them make the choices.

I know a studio where I can record (for free!) which has a nice live room i think I am going to say record everything in there and not use the vocal booth, do the guitar and vocals at the same time and try and get that feel back, might mic up the room and just use that reverb everything in one space. it's not going to fit in with everything else I've recorded for my promo/ep thing though:-(

Anywho I'll try and report back, bear in mind though that i've been trying to get 4 tracks together to send out for about 4 years now (in which time I have lost all my contacts) so it may not be soon

I hear that, bro.

Guess you'll have to make it a full length album then, ay?

I dig it a lot! Just a couple punch blips and one or two compressor issues on the vocals is all, I think it sounds great! I wanted to hear some reverb or delay on the vocals at first, but I found myself really appreciating the dry vocals.

Re-record it or keep it, it's your call. I dig it either way.

Turns out our local council made up my mind for me, was going to give it a quick go at recording something, and this morning they have decided to start digging up the road outside my house (repairing the drains or something), the whole building is shaking and I'm going crazy (I work from home!) they will be there for at least a month

now I have to find the time to go down to the studio, before I go mad.

Great song!!!

There's a band called 'The Frames' which I think you'd really like - if you don't know them already. They're from Dublin.

I love the Frames I've got to go see them live soon (I've been saying that for a while) I love their recordings as well. Maybe I should ask whoever produced their album 'burn the maps' to give me ago, I wouldn't have any money to pay them of course, but they would get to put my name on their discographies which has to be worth something:-)
