Advice is much needed

Hey guys this is my first post but I've been floating around the boards for a while just soaking things in.

My knowledge on recording is limited at the moment but you all started somewhere right. Anyways my band just recorded a few songs in our basements and could use a lot of help. At the moment I can't tell you the equipment but that will be posted tomorrow. I play through a podxt for the guitar and we use Sonar producer ed. I have autotune 4 (hardly used it in the recordings... best settings to use for my singers voice/style?)

I would really appreciate it if a few of you would listen a track or two and give some feedback. Specifically, what can I do with the vocals(effects/compressors/??you can see I'm very new at this). I just feel that they need to be more full or something. And do you have any advice on how to record the screams. Like I said I'm using Sonar and am able to get pretty good variety of plugins. Anything advice that would help the final product would be appreciated.

Are you using a good pre, or compression on the vocal? Vocals could be louder in general, drums sound a little fake, try to give them some more dynamics. Are you planning to record your demo.

Like I said I am very new at this. Drums... are fake. We don't have the equipment right now to record live drums so we used a program within sonar to do so. I don't know if we are using a good compressor (or one at all) for the vocals. It will probably help if I say the set up and mic that we use. I'll tell you tomorrow when I have access to our equipment.

We are recording all of our songs 7/8 right now but do plan on heading to a studio in a couple months to get it done professionally. We're workin with what we got now though.

we are using a cheap ($150) samsung condensor mic going through a mixer into the comp. We're using sonar. Maybe buying a new mic would help. would the shure sm57 be a good choice. keep in mind most of our tracks are 50/50 scream/sing. Any tips on how to improve the quality of the mix of the track. Any help would be much appreciated.

I think most of this community would say an sm57 is a great addition to anyones mic collection. You could try one on vocals, I've used one in a live situation with fair results...some singers really sound good on them, but probably your condenser is better suited. They're very usable on guitar cabs, acoustics, snare...etc.

You can try some software compression when you are mixing the vocals. There are a ton of posts regarding technique.

The drums are extremely poor in my opinion. There fakeness really kills the track. If you have a drummer why not try throwing the condenser in the room and see what you get? Fiddle with the postitioning and you may get some pleasant results. I'd try to just get more dynamic natural drums and then get the vox to sit better (and with more authority), it'll help everything come together.

I'm by no means an expert, just sharing my thoughts.

Thanks for posting.
