Question Run

Just thought I'd post a live track I recorded a couple weeks ago. It's a cover of "Run" by Collective Soul.

I'm singing lead and playing the acoustic. My friend Jeff Hall is playing bass and singing harmonies on the second verse. His 18-year-old brother Tom is playing the lead guitar.

This was Tom's first gig with us, and he was basically just improvising, having never heard the song before. He was running direct into the board.

I did something kinda fun with the chorus on this recording--apologies in advance to the purists out there. That night, each time the chorus came 'round, I sang a different harmony. For this recording, I've combined the three harmony parts for each chorus, so you get to hear the backing vocals like I was hearing them in my head.

If anyone is wondering, this was recorded from my Yamaha 01x (doubling as my live mixer) into my laptop running SX3 via firewire. I sang into a Neumann KMS105.

I'd be interested to hear what you think.
Or, absent any feedback, I hope some people just download and enjoy it, 'cause I think it sounds pretty nice!

-Mike

Nice job. Great voice. Harmonies thing really works. Actually reminds me of Kirsty MacColl doing the odd bit of backing vocals for The Smiths!!

...'Let's do Yellow'?! Dude, you ruined it!

I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of Auto-Tune.

But for the sake of argument, do you hear those nasty AT artifacts somewhere, or are you just marveling at my near perfect intonation? I'm pretty careful about using relaxed enough settings so it doesn't jump out at you, but I was a bit more aggressive on this tune, I'll admit. But I'll also admit I REALLY LIKE the results!

And JD et al., thanks for the kind words! I just wanted to share this with the hope that someone would like it, mostly. I listened to it in my car today and thought someone out there might dig it, too.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that this is a cool little underground pizza place I've had a standing monthly gig at for 14 years. You can even hear the guy calling out the orders in the background.

And I was going to delete that little bit about the next song (a request!), but I thought it was kinda funny. Besides, if you listen to the whole show, you know what's coming next.
