Sidechaining in rock

If we forget the fact that there are not much right's and wrong's in mixing for a minute I want to ask something about sidechaining in rock music.

I would like to try and compress a couple of tracks with a key input like vocal etc. I guess its a common trick to compress 5th powerchord type of guitars with vocal track as key? Any other applications I might consider?? Eg. Key:Vocals, compression:Keys? etc. ?

Thanks a lot in advance...

hmmm... if the kick is getting lost in the bass, i'll duck the bass off the kick. never tried guitars off the vox. makes sense, though. i usually do volume automation.

If you believe the artist might ask the mastering engineer to crush the crap out of your mix, then I might urge against this. Otherwise, do what you feel.
