Thread Starter | Critique my 2nd paying mix! (Rock/metal/progressive/hardcore/...emo?) Just finished the mix of a demo I did for the band "That Was Then, This Is Now." I recorded, produced, mixed and "mastered" (waves linear eq & L2 lol) it. Let me know what you think! I'll get into details of the recording if you're interested. We did it in a rush so it could be tighter and there are some sloppy drum edits here and there, but overall I like how it came out. I'd love to hear some of your opinions though. PLEASE BE BRUTALLY HONEST. I can take it. I have to say I'm really into the music too...the singer is glassjaw-ish, the drummer has some mars volta and tool influence...good sh!t. We're recording a full length in september, and we'll actually be utilizing some good rooms and better equipment, should be fun |

| MP3's suck don't they?...I'm sure this song sounds much better in your room. Two things of input - I want the low end to rip my head off but it seems pretty weak (kick) do you have a good sub? - the other depth, probably is the mp3 but seems kind of one layer-ish. But in the positive every thing has it's place and the mix over all is very good. Nice work.

| it's an effective mix, gets the energy across really well. you did a damn good job. here're my bones to pick, since you asked: 1) lots of stuff out to the edges, and up the middle, but not much anywhere else. it leaves holes between the elements that i want filled in somehow. 2) the drums are too small, especially the snare. my money is on the L2 killing the transients, but i don't know the original mix so i can't say. 3) the cymbals are too crunchy and buried. these are nits, if i was the client and didn't have an engineer's ears i'd be thrilled. i gotta ask, you a guitarist by any chance? gregoire del ubk |

| This is good! I like it a lot. There were times where the drums got a little washed out (e.g. against full force guitar attack), but other places where the drums sound really good. I don't think this is an equipment issue (if it is an issue at all). Have you listened to it on a lot of different systems or mostly in your control room? Don't give too much weight to my critique... I listened exactly once, from across the room with my dishwasher running. But then, those are realistic listening conditions for a lot of people :-) Congrats on a great mix! |

| Lives for gear | Good work! But I wanna "up" the drums too - maybe lower the guitars 0.1 db´s Well, I´m just listening very hard. All in all - a great mix! |
