Stoner Rock - Once again all natural mix

Hello once again.

Here we have a mixdown that was done around the end of 2005 with my old equipment. The premisses were to let it sound down to earth and to not use ANY layering or triggers. There you go :

Sounds cool...sounds like you were going for a sound somewhere between Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age.

The balances sound pretty spot-on (OK, the snare might be a hair loud), so the following criticisms are pretty much just my personal aesthetics at work:

- MORE LOW END!!! Heh. OK. Kyuss is one of my favorite bands, and I'm a biiig fan of the stupidly bottom-heavy guitars. I mean, it sounds HUGE just after smoking a big fat blunt.
- it's a little dry on the drums...again, the Kyuss influence is at work here, but between records by the Melvins, Kyuss, Slo Burn, and Sleep, there's definitely a precedent for cavernous drums in the genre.
- last: the vocals are little "pop"-sounding...that is, more high-end, more dynamics, and more volume than I'd expect...in other words, you did too good a job! This one's particularly subjective and of course depends heavily on the target audience.

So there you have it...I should mention I was listening to Kyuss just before I checked out your mix, and have since put them back on, so I've sorta got that sound in my ear. Take everything I say with a grain of salt (or two).

Hello.

Thank you very much for your feedback. You are right, the aim was to get close to that QOTSA sound. And i gree that the drums are a bit dry, but they wanted to hear the 'dust of the desert in there' and completely disliked more ambient sounding drums so i gave them what they wanted. by the way I have another song uploaded here with drums that i really like (its the Neurosis and Isis like mix) in terms of 'wetness' and sound. Thank you very much for your words on the vocals. The singer indeed wanted it a bit pop-sounding because he likes this music more so this was his preference. I am glad i managed that task not only in my eyes. Haha. The guitars were some kind of a problem because they had these old REALLY worn out MARSHALLs that had absolutely no bottom end left in them and combined with Strats this was not THE big deal. But for Fenders its okay i think. Haha.

Until soon.
