Would really appreciate some feedback on these performances

My biggest struggle in finishing things is worrying about the performances - often to the point of focussing excessively on extremely minor things and overlooking more major flaws.

I have drums and two guitar tracks that I've just recorded (me on guitar, friend drumming) for a song. I am concerned that whilst the drumming is pretty much on time with a metronome, there are minor inconsistencies sprinkled throughout that detract from the groove. I feel as though the biggest contributor to this is the chorus sections in which the drummer plays the hihats. It would be very much appreciated if I could have some feedback about this - I have listened to the track many times in the last day, so please let me know if I'm just over analysing it. If you think that there are some problems that can be fixed by relatively simple edits, please let me know the times that this occurs. If you think this take should be scrapped and re tracked, please be honest. Keep in mind this is totally unfinished/unmixed etc.

Thanks a lot

In this day and age, no one should feel silly about being a stickler for getting it RIGHT at the performance level. Good on you for that.

Personally I think everything sounds great, meter wise. If anything the metronome kind of robbed you guys of a natural groove, which given the genre, I'd say is worth way more than technical correctness, as far as the pro tools grid is concerned.

If you're going to insist on retracking, go for live, no click! Set your amp up in another room, give up a single drum mic if you have to budget your number of inputs, and just let it happen the natural way brother!

Sounds good. Its SO easy to over analyze when you listen to something over and over and over (trust me i know) I think I'm learning to limit the number of times I allow myself to listen to tracks....

If there is something that you think might detract, just edit it. Like I just heard a tiny kick drum inconsistency...totally easy to edit. But the trick is not over editing.
Love the groove. Whats the point of having a human play drums if your not going to leave in a little bit of flavor?

Very nice sounds, bet it will polish up nicely with mixing.

Or if you want that 'tight' feel why not beat detective it a little bit?

Thanks a lot for your help, great to hear that it sounds pretty good. After a break, the minor inconsistencies don't seem to bother me as much. I'll definitely go through with finishing this recording. Will post an update when I finish tracking this week some time.

Just posting an updated version with bass by the very helpful/awesome bassist Dan Hawkins Dan Hawkins Bass Player - Home

I could have attempted to play the bass myself but don't really consider myself to be a strong enough bass player for recording purposes - at least definitely not as inventive as Dan. I also figure that the cost of having a pro playing the bass is really insignificant considering that it really raises the potential of the song and gives me one less aspect of the performance to be self concious of.

I am going to be recording vocals tomorrow, so I hope to have this song finished up at some point next week.

I am still after someone to add a fairly subtle keyboard part - if you think you could provide this service or could recommend someone please send me a PM and I'll provide more details.

Thanks
