Hard to say - maybe you can get a better performance without cans? I you used cans that is.

interesting sound, no strength in her voice or much control. It's a typical case of not singing from where she should be and using to much throat. Needs training and strengthening but she does't suck. | |

No he doesn't suck. Few singers that CAN sing suck and this singer CAN sing. He has a pretty feminine voice and in my opinion it makes his voice special, which is positive rather than negative. On the other hand, he has got wrong breathing technique, he needs air almost after each note. He puts the vowels wrongly with his mouth. The emotions are not there, but that is much because of the whole production, but partly also due to how he uses his voice, for instance not holding the tones long enough, not moving between them smoothly and not using any vibrato. ALWAYS find the right key for the singer. He would need a singing teacher to efficiently make it work really well. In terms of the mixing I think some more reverb would be nice to make his vocals sustain a bit more and I think different EQing and multiband comp settings would further improve his voice. Other than that, he has already come pretty far. Tell him this: - Focus on adding vibrato, that will solve some of your breathing problems. - Distribute attacks and decays on the notes such that it creates more emotions. - Form the mouth correctly on each vowel. Practise this a lot. - Focus on creating your unique sounds with your voice by using it as an instrument. You can do this by controlling the air flow inside your mouth. - Try to find sweet spots in your voice and warm up by singing only this tone repeatedly, first in the main key, then in different keys. - Practise by singing both with words and with beautiful words in a fantasy language that you create in real-time. - Sing more with playback, but in your key. This is of course only some basic techniques. To take it further he will at some point have to get the right attitude shine through (preferrably spiritual peace) and he needs an encouraging and supportive environment for that. The reason is that vocals is the single most important element in a mix for making it come alive. Find the right recording days and use them efficiently. Give it time. A final thought, time is better than judgement. |

Actually he really reminds me of Elliott Smith. Which is definitely a good thing.

pitchy on chorus. Do I hear some Auto-tune modulating in there? He needs coaching but he has a good tone to his voice.

That's a male singer? No... The boy doesn't suck.He sounds pretty decent. I'd have to hear him sing some more challenging material... Before I could pass any sort of realistic critique. For that song, he sounds just fine. |

I don't think the mix is complimenting or helping anything...either the vocals & the song itself. I'd start by dropping the vocals back a few dB or maybe pushing some of the instruments up and picking a long & lush reverb for the whole track and get some ambience going.

I think the vocals are rather loud in the mix and very breathy but far from sucking. Tell him to take deeper breaths and sing longer parts But no He doesn't suck...
