Question pseudo prog rock pop ballad mix need critic

hey guys I just finished mixing this new song for my album using a lot of the new Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machines (even automated the Input knob on the masterbus to color more of the different sections of the song). it's a little experiment

I used VTM with Waves NLS (mostly the Neve and EMI) it was also to try NLS as well and my RC Tube demo expired so I need to buy it soon. NLS work and sound cool I think but will try mixing the rest with RC Tube.

here is the ruff mix not yet mastered your comments are welcome like you will see it was a very complex mix and hard work getting it all together.lots of tracks and changes.

thank you very much for your time and feedback

Your song

Hey Patrick

Very arty! I like the concept of this song. I think the production and arrangement is coloured and interesting - I'm sure a lot of work has gone into this.
Regarding the mix, I think you've overcooked it a bit. There seems to be distortion/over saturation on some parts that I WOULDN'T expect. Have you pushed this through a mix compressor to try and get that 'mastered' flavour? To me, the over-compressed sound has taken a bit of life out of the mix, which translates to a loss of sparkle and transients.

Take this as constructive. It's a dreamy song - very moody and I really like it.

thank you very much for your comments glad you like it.you might be right. i've put a bit of buss compression and limiting on the mix but not that much. il look into that also I might back off the tape saturation and console emulation too. i'm still learning those tools so I dont want to overdo it but I want that color cause those are the kind of song that it's cool to have it a bit dirty and not too clean.

ill keep you posted
thanks again and it's nice to have feedback from someone in NZ!!

Hi Patrick, thanks, it's a pleasure.

Just a couple of things if you're new to the mix game.

1. The tape saturation plugins are best used (IMHO) with care (not too much)particulary on the mix buss, unless you're really wanting an obvious effect,

2. It's easy to over-compress. When you add up track compression, then buss compression then mix compression - it's a cumulative process that can squeeze the life out of your music. Think of compressors like this: use them for levelling or colour, or both. Some tracks don't need compression (heavily distorted guitar). Try a mix with no compressors except on the mix buss. Mix with no compressors. See what it sounds like.

Have a crack and repost your track.
Good luck.

This is nice! I really like to listen to it!
From 2.00 to 3.20 I would appreciate if the soung was not that compressed. There are several nice instruments that gives beauty if you can hear them separated. In this mix it's not that easy to hear the brilliance that should be from each instrument (IMHO).

Great dynamics!
