1st Full Length Album!

To celebrate the fact that the 1st full length album that I engineered, mixed and produced was released yesterday, I wanted to see what stories you all have from working on your first records! You can listen to the album here (it's available to stream for free):

Seriously, Though... | Upstate Escape

We tracked drums out of our rehearsal space at the Music Building in Manhattan close to Port Authority, for those of you who are familiar. 2 different sessions for that one, and I learned a lot after the first time. I mic'd the bottom of the snare on the second session and it made a world of difference. You'll all probably be able to tell which songs had the better drum takes! The rest of the album was mostly tracked out of my apartment in Jersey City, with the exception of some guitars.

All in all, I learned a whole lot on this project. The tracks definitely improved as we went along, but there's still much room for improvement. We also didn't get the thing mastered, so I mostly ran a compression glue across all the tracks to more or less get them level and bring up the volume a bit. I'd love to hear feedback / criticisms, etc from you all! Here's the gear list below:

Gear used on Drums:
  • 2 akg c451-eb's on the Overheads
  • sm57 snare top
  • sennheiser md 431 snare bottom
  • akg d112 Kick
  • sm57's on tom1 and floor tom.

Guitars used:
  • 1999 Custom Shop Fender Telecaster
  • Gibson Firebird
  • Jackson Soloist, SL2H-MAH
  • Fender Standard Jazz Bass, 5 String
  • A 5 string Warwick Bass with active pickups,
  • and some other 6 string bass that I have no idea.. here's a pic

Guitar Amps:
  • Vox AC-30
  • Marshall JCM-2000 (with a 1969 cab I believe)
  • Mesa Recto-Recording Pre
  • Ibanez TSA15h (usually in 5 watt mode in my apartment)
  • I typically mic'd the cabs with a md421 / sm57 combo. I wish I had a Royer r121!!

Vox:
  • Most tracks I used the M-Audio Sputnik through either the Golden Age Pre 73, or the Presonus Eureka.
  • I also used the Shure sm7b on some tracks.

Preamps:
  • Golden Age Pre 73
  • Presonus Eureka
  • Art Digial Pro MPA II
  • M-Audio Octane 8
  • RME UFX

Interface:
  • RME UFX that I have at our rehearsal space.
  • Tascam FW-1884 that I have at my apartment. I wish I could have used the RME for the entire session!!

I've been listening pretty fast on several tracks and like the mixing allthough it's not the kind of music I listen to everyday. A lot of tracks are like two minutes not longer. That is new to me.
My english is not that good so I'm not sure how to say this that is a positive reaction from me, well I'll try to say what I mean: the tracks sound like each other in the mix, same volume out same amount of high and low frequency in the instruments. That is difficult for me, to mix to get the same kind of bassound from the bass and the same sound from the vocals - on several tracks. So one question of importance is, did you also do the mastering yourself?

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, I suppose I was looking for some critique/tips on the quality of the recording and not so much the music itself, so I really appreciate the comments. I also thought it'd be fun to post the gear I used and get some suggestions on better equipment that I could be using for this type of music.

The album was not mastered in the traditional sense.. I just organized all of the rendered tracks to a single project, organized them as to when I wanted them to start/stop, and put a very light glue compression on the entire project to keep levels consistent. Then I bounced each WAV individually and posted!

It seems like that doesn't it? threads like these will get 700 views with 4 comments, but if you say something like, "In my opinion, you can emulate a great analog sound through soft synths", and you're in for 20 pages worth of feedback

Anyway, I had a full length listen to this album through a pair of KRK Rokit 8s and I gotta say, you've done a fine job with this. I also listened through Ultrasone PROline 650 headphones too. It sounded a little bright through the cans, but thats typical of them.

I do this as a hobby and am by no means a pro, so my comments might not carry much weight, but if I produced this I would be very proud of myself. I think the drums sound great for the style and I love the guitar tone, especially the acoustic sound at the beginning of Steal Away! Most of all, there weren't really any sore thumbs sticking out. It seemed like you got everything to gel nicely including the vocals.

The fact that this hasn't seen a mastering house is just awesome, because honestly at this point I think, why bother? It sounds pretty consistent and balanced like it is, no?

The concept art is just bad ass!

If I had to dig deep for criticism, I might say that at times, the bass was a little top heavy and dry for my taste. It seemed a bit midrangey but only on certain tracks. Maybe it's that Fender jazz, but definitely not a show stopper by any means.

So, are you actually in this band, or did you just produce the album?

If this were the type of music I listend to on the regular, I'd have no problem paying 7 bucks for this. Awesome job, and I hope one day my mixes can come close to this.

Frestforlife: Thanks for the feedback... I appreciate you taking the time to listen to the entire album! I mostly tried to mix using my monitors (Tascam VL-X5's), just because I tend to mix too bass heavy with headphones.

As far as mastering goes, I really wanted to get that done but the singer of the band had a good point in saying that for the purposes of this project the mastering would mostly be self-serving. It's not a professionally produced album and people wouldn't get *that* much more enjoyment listening to this slightly louder/wider. I still would like to hear what it could sound like though

For the bass, the tracks that I'm not as happy with were actually when the bassist did not use the fender jazz. The tracks with that bass came out great! Would definitely only want to track with that bass next time. I just couldn't really get the other ones to sound quite right.

I'm not in this band, though am in another band with the drummer and singer of this one. We're all friends and I enjoy their music so I offered to produce the album for them. Again, thanks so much for checking the album out in its entirety!
