Thread Starter | Any lounge/Jazz electronic or house music officianados - advice on a rough mix wanted
80 views and no comments - I guess listen first and read the blurb after - go on - it's why we're all here
The background to this is that I have no ostensible background in lounge or house music, but as a long term keyboard player and writer I started to get pulled into lounge through Stephane Pompougnac's Hotel Costes stuff and a lot more since (recently really loving St Germain) so I just did this demo tonight - please ignore the piano in the middle (!), I was in producer mode so just threw in a few bars of out of time stuff to mark a space for the piano solo later). I've literally just bounced it down rough and ready now, so I know the production is off (it's a static mix). I just don't really know that much about this genre and would really welcome any comments, advice, constructive criticism or just general info about this genre - I'm steadily being drawn into it! |

something sounds unquantized in the ep rhythm synth. Other than some sligh timing issues I like it a lot

You're probably right, I probably didn't quantise it - I'll take a look - I'm not a natural with rhythms and I have a couple of real Hi hats in there as well as a tambourine, so I may have to clear that lot up a bit. |

I like it....that unquantized thing gives the track more "human" feel

Hi, lovely track, congats! nice instruments,
sitting nicely in the mix,
loving the jazzy mood, the piano solo and the brass instruments
I would bring up the vocals a bit in the mix
Just my personal preference - one might layer up an acoustic kick drum on the TR-909 kick, if one wants to go in more "organic" direction,
cheers, j.

What is your problem? Straight G.
The E at the beginning of each cycle is a hint at the relative minor.
Problem here is one that is endemic to loopers and samplists, unfortunately.
You make a track from some relatively sophisticated sequences without really knowing what is going on musically.
I don't mean to diss you OP and others that struggle with this, but it really is very elementary to anyone who can actually play properly.
You do have some kind of an ear as the stuff you are noodling is not dissonant, but I get an awful feeling you are hitting quite a few of those right" notes by luck rather than judgement.
Tear a few of the actual chords apart that make up the backing and you will get a much better understanding of what is going on.
And then see if you can suss out where it modulates to in the latter part.
Once again, I really really am NOT trying to belittle or patronise here - all this shit is a learnable skill, but you do have to put in the hours on the right stuff.
No use practising 4 hours a day if you are already doing it wrong or don't know what to practise.
Good luck!
(GRIN) READ MY APOLOGY IN THE REASON FOR EDITING. WAS GOING TO DELETE THIS "ANSWER" TILL I REALISED SOMEONE MIGHT ALREADY HAVE SEEN IT' SO HERE IT IS - COMPLETELY IN THE WRONG THREAD! THIS WAS FOR THE GUY WHO SAID HE COULDNT FIGURE OUT THE KEY A PIECE WAS IN.

Nice vibes!!!
I would do a little gentle timing correction though as for me the blur in the timing is wrong as it stands.
Maybe not hard quantising. But percentage quant can go a long way. Maybe the back and forth chords can be unquantised, but catch a short, tight loop and run it. That type of thing.
I don't mind the 909. Does 'that' thing. Tis house, innit?

Ivansc - I've just got my head round what heppened here - thanks for the kind words in the other thread - I'll see you there because I've just realised what my problem with keys is |
