Sounds great !
I would like to hear a bit more the singer, more in front.
I would also try to add a bit more fx on the voice.

What gear did you used ?

Thanks man

Yea I actually mixed a second tune on them yesterday that I was much happier with the vocals, really 76'd the hell out of him and added some more efx. I generally air on the side of caution with a snger until I see how they react, but this guy is cool with whatever so I will repost the next mix when I have time to go back and tweak it.

What gear you want to know? Vocally? Peluso 251(lead) and 47LE (bu), Pendulum MDP(lead) and Neve 1272 (bu), 76, Fatso, McDSP Revolver reverb, Eventide Harmonizer...damn didn't reealize it was so long!!! Think I used the URS N Mix for the eq, but not sure.

Anyway, it'll be next week, but I'll repost the new and hopefully final mix soon.

I did sound for Local H about 6 months ago...

About the mix...it's pretty good...good enough for rock and roll. Could use a little more up front vocals. Wasn't crazy about the bass, it wasn't very complimentry to the rhythm...sounds like a guitarist playing bass to me.

The vocals do get drowned out a bit. There is a lot of highs coming from the guitars which aren't helping that either the guitars still sound good though. Maybe a couple more db for the vocals.

Heres what may just be the final mix....sorry for the link, but apparently you can't upload the same song to different threads....Scroll down, it is the summed mix thru the Shadow Hills Equinox.

Or maybe not....it will see a few more changes like the bass coming down, more highs on theOH's and some tweeks here and there (this was my first mix with the Equinox so I overdid it a bit I think)....oh and it will go to 1/2" when all is said and done.
Any opinions?

hello

after listening to http://gearslutz.com/board/attachmen...7&d=1149914710

here is what i have to say

. bass is very annoying and ****s up the entire mix, turn it down !
. lead vocals, too "lo fi", dry, not warm, not upfront enough... thin !
. backg vox too loud in comparaison w/ main vocals
. too much "master buss compression"
. guitars could be better, i don't know what they sound like before u tweaked them, they seem to lack "body", but i'm not sure about this... it just is not good enough =)
. OH too muddy (the ride is hard to hear)

what did you encode this mp3 with, it sounds like it was encoded @ 112 Kps or lower but is a 192 MP3 file

the overall mix sounds lo fi, too heavily compressed, too much "bad bass", no quality highs.... and it is not "stereo enough" for me =)

voilĂ  =)

priorities = bass & vox
could be better = guitars, overall compression, OH

Welcome to G'Slutz...pretty vicious for a first post man...

Mostly agree with you however. The only problem with alot of what you said, but did not know, is that some of the terms and your "issues" are what the band asked for. (Except the over compression and bass being too loud, that was me by accident.) They wanted the thinned out lo fi vox and the overly loud backups. I am going to go in and redo some of it on my own and not tell them! And as you can read in my last post, I already intended to cut the bass down and tweak out the OH's (not a very clean or precise drummer though so....) Funny thing about the bassist thing is that in town he is kind of revered as one of the king dick bass players, but everyone on here so far hates him...interesting.

I still have to get a handle on the Equinox. I think the overcompression was due to me leaving my setup the same as my ITB mixes and not tweaking it for this unit. It may even be too much transformer and not compression. Going to have some time tomorrow to revisit it.

So thanks for the post, sounds like we are on the same page. I will repost when I make the changes, feel free to relisten and re-critique!

Nice song. The vocals are better in your more recent mix. I think they are closer to where they need to be. The mix is glued together well. Maybe too well. Lost some dynamics along the way for some reason. Sounds like the background vox are too loud in the chorus or bridge portion of the tune. Good drum sound. Make sure the drums stay punchy in the mix dynamically. Cash in on that killer drum sound. You are very close. Nice work. The vox sound a little outta tune or key or whatever??? Not much for tune and key determination (drummer here), but something doesn't sound quite right with the vox. Nice work though!

Still not to tape but I think I am close on it now....went about it a bit different this time, less buss comp 1-3db, different bass sound all together, beefier guitars, played with the vox a bit.

(This may sound a bit odd, but sometimes I allow out of tune vocals....teaches the singer each time he hears it that he needs to improve. Part of me wants musicians to know they mess up so they will practice more and improve and quit expecting us to "fix" everything. Otherwise we may never see another Guns N Roses or Soundgarden!)
But that is another tangent for another time.

So yes I know he is out from time to time.

Let me know how you like the remix

definitly sounds better now imo !
vocals still could be improved, but drums sounds better, guitars too
Kick sounds good but is a bit shy in comparaison to the snare & cymbals
overall mix compression is not annoying anymore
bass is better but still sounds a bit "too compressed" on its solo part, and imprecise through the whole song, i just don't like its sound !

i guess the weak link is the bass/kick combo
one of the hardest things to mix in this genre imo =)

i wouldn't do any better

out of tune vocals are something i hate but those vocals don't sound bad to me, just no perfect, nothing really serious !

i guess you're almost done on this one

Nice!

The only thing is, the vox still needs to come up a bit, and maybe a bit more space carved out for it in the mix. Just slightly though.

Not trying to defend myself here, but the singer is actually trying to make me LOWER the vocals now....not going to do it, but just thought you guys would now understand why I have only taken them so far.
Damn insecure singers!!!
