I need a second pair of ears - Break Of Day

Hello! I've been reading this forum and it has helped me with many aspects of mixing. I am in the process of producing an album (my material). I am not a commercial engineer, I only do this as a hobby that has slowly got more serious as the years have gone by. However, I am as a whole pleased with what I am able to put together.

However: I really need some pointers on how to get this project closer to sending the tracks off for mastering. I have found the mix to sound remarkably different in varied environments. I know this is due to my lack of skill as an 'engineer' and my equipment. So in this regard: any input would be appreciated and I will be grateful. Thank you.

Since it sounds like you are new to the industry based on your comments, I am wondering if you plan on marketing and selling this product. If so, is everything you have supplied your own creation, or did you have others involved?

I am taking it one step at a time. Marketing and selling? Distributing to the general public would be a bonus but this project more than anything is a personal endeavour.

Yes, everything has been written, recorded (save the hi hats and female backing vocals) arranged, mixed by myself.

Right now, I just want to know what my studio isn't telling me.

For what it's worth (I'm not really in a position to offer solid advice): it takes 30 seconds to get to the rhythm so maybe cut the intro.

The vocal has plenty of energy (something I spectacularly fail at). You're right: there is something odd about how it's not sitting in the mix. What is the effect you're using? I suspect it's not helping. I used to cover up my vocals in effects but eventually bit the bullet and now put my voice upfront uncovered.

When you get to the line 'and as I fall asleep" after the guitar solo have you considered dropping the track right down to voice + drums ?

Good luck

Thanks

Thank you for taking the time to listen The vocal has gone through an equalization effect, and then distortion in the left, the same but other way around in the right, and then compressed both sides. I really like the effect as it changes the mood slightly for the verse.

The main issue of the mix I'm finding at the moment is there is no punch. When the drums and bass come in especially. I'm also thinking the bass guitar is sitting slightly too high or occupying frequencies best reserved for other instruments.

You are right about the drums and the bass...totally lack punch and presence. It sounds as if you've dedicated to much time for the vocals and failed to pay attention to the driving section of the song (drums, bass and rhythmic elements).

You need to use the EQ a bit more effectively to create some space in there as everything seems very muddy at the moment. The vocals need more control and maybe loose that effect as it bounces the vocals left and right and makes it sounds unprofessional.

Just my 2 cents anyways. Cool track otherwise, might be suited for radio as well as the rhythm and energy is there, it just needs a bit of emphasizing.

Cheers!
