Stoner rock mix

Hey there,

this is a stoner rock song I mixed (I didn't record that one). It was done in a huge studio room (killer sound!) with no real high-end gear but it sounds cool to my ears :
http://sylvain.raulin.free.fr/Like%20a%20river.wav

The mix is a little hot but that was just a quick bounce from what I've done. Toms muted and no vocals yet.

Maybe the bass drum is too clicky for that style ?
Guitars too scooped ? (it was difficult not to EQ them a lot to make the drums come through, it seems that the engineer used too much gain on the amp).
The DI track of the bass was awful, so I only kept the Beta 52 track, that I copied on a second track, with high and low pass filters used to control the distorsion I put on it later.
I mixed samples and mics, with some sample delays to make the samples to sound right, as well as overdrives and distorsions for the drums.

I know they used the following gear to record :

Drums : Pearl BRX with Istanbul and ZIldjian cymbals
OH => C414 XLS => big Tascam digital console pre
hats => SM81 => big Tascam digital console pre
bass drum => Beta 52 => big Tascam digital console pre
bass drum => Beta 91 => big Tascam digital console pre
Toms => C414 ULS => big Tascam digital console pre
Snare top => Beta 57 => big Tascam digital console pre
Snare top 2 => Beta 98 => big Tascam digital console pre
Snare bottom => SM57 => big Tascam digital console pre
No room mics (unfortunately :()

Bass : Ibanez bass into an Ampeg SVT3 head and Ampeg fridge
Avalon U5 DI
Amp => Beta 52 => API (if I remember well)

Guitars : Ibanez guitar into a Fender amp
Brauner Phantom C into a console pre (tracks doubled)

Sound card was a MOTU 2408 Mk3.

What do you think ? What can I improve ?

I love stoner - the drums sounds wrong for stoner. This mix sounds like a dump, some of the edits etc is not there yet (lee).

I wasn't impressed by this at all! But thanks anyway for sharing. Kyuss rules!

Wow !

I don't know stoner very well, so that's why I may go in the wrong way, please can you tell me what's wrong ?

I know it's too "metal" sounding. I'll fix that for sure and will keep the natural from them.
Remember I didn't record it, just gave it a try for mixing.

I didn't do any editing on the drums.

Check out Kyuss - blues for the red sun - etc. They got a awesome drum sound among other things. It's a cool tip! Check it out today and let me know what you think!

I would feel totally corny and stupid if I was going to tell you what's wrong etc. I don't think you can go wrong. I just painted my picture when I comment on the drums. It's impossible to comment any further. I guess you could start with black sabbath and work your way up... Stoner is so emotional and groovy. You got to have the right attitude and urge to play in the groove sweet spot.

I'm not entitle to give you guidelines - you must find the path from inside. There are no rules.

Hope this makes sense.

Yours truly,
Dim Light (Spain)

hello pelo!

the Guitars amp isn't a Fender amp but is a Carvin tube amp (50w)...but I think there is too much gain during the recording!!!!! tutt
