Mix Resuce! All opinions wanted!!!

Hey guys,

Im pretty new to both mixing and mastering (more so to mastering anyway) and I was handed a pretty dodgy mix by a friend who needed it mastered straight away, I told him that was never gonna get a good master from a bad mix but he has run out of time I was just wondering if you could take a look and point out any really bad issues as Im sure I missed a few, this has been mastered with a Maserati Mastering plugin!!! But I feel its not really clear enough in certain places!

I know its a strange style of music but there happy with the composition so thats up to them its just any mastering and mixing issues im concerned about!

Would really appreciate anyone who could take a look!

The mastering is very good.
Tony would be proud.
The band needs to learn how to play. (together)

I agree, the band is really loose, not in a way that flatters the song. I like some of the tones, and overall clarity of the mix. But yeah, tighten up gentlemen.

As far as your mastering job, you did fine. I am concerned about the end. Is it supposed to cut off like that? Does it go straight into another song?

The bass on this song is nice but the drums are doing it no justice. Try get a real kit in there or use something like BFD or Studio drummer. Also there's too much reverb on the vocals in the chorus.
Apart from the fact that it's very loose it is a nice little song and definitely worth fixing.
For someone with little experience you've done a good job on the mastering. I think you'll need to go back to the mixing stage first though and try to improve it from there

I am having trouble focusing on the mix. Did you pan your bass guitar and vocals? Sounds like the bass is on the left and vocals on the right. I think it could use a little more punch. Think your on the right track!

Ah man, I'm the bad guy here I guess ...

I thought the bass took up too much of the spectrum. Obviously IMHO. Yeah, it just sounds like the guitars and vocals have a slice of the EQ and the bass is taking up the rest.

Outside of that, there's nothing else I could critique about it (apart from the obvious little performance issues - but you can't control that).

It's a good mix, my preferences aside.

Just so everyone realizes, the OP did not mix this song. He did an emergency mastering session on an already mixed song. So mix critique isn't really going to help

Hey guys thanks for the replies,

I think from the advice here and from what I can hear im goin to ask for the stems for the instruments from the guy and mix it myself.

Its weird in my headphones the bass actually seems a little in the background and i thought it neede a little more bass for punch.

The Bass and vocals are panned centre apart from the backin vocals in the chorus but im gonna redo them using the HASS software I just got as i've seen them used to pan really nicely.

@markdefunk, i just saw a friend use studio drummer and bought it straight away, the original drums were done on Guru but im gonna redo them on StudioDrummer with the band as the current drums really let the song down, unfortunately there is no chance of a real kit!

When the remix is done ill put it up and see what u think!
