Any suggestions for improving this mix?

This is a mix I'm doing for a hardcore-ish band. There aren't any vocals yet, as they do not have vocalists but the instruments are here. Everything is pretty much mixed and I'm on to mastering it and I've added a master eq curve to it, but I can't decide where to go with it. The mix seems a little muddy to me, any suggestions?

Sorry for my directness but this mix is far away from being on a professional level. It sounds small and flat. Do yourself a fovour and talk with a guy from a studio in your local area and try to fix the recording and mix. Sorry only my true and honest opinion.
All the best!

Are you using reference mixes while doing this? If you switch back and forth you should notice a huge difference between your mix and a professional mix. What are the differences that you can hear?

What I hear is that the high end hurts my ears. It's pretty lifeless (no punch) and there is really no separation. Don't give up though! It took me YEARS to get it good enough to feel I was worthy of being payed for it.

Bust out your favorite CD's in the genre and study them and figure out what they are doing, with your ears. Listen to the relationships with the frequencies and the instruments. Feel the kick and punch of the guitars in your chest. What is the stereo image like? Dynamics? Just break it down.
