My first mastered single! St. Helen

Hi,
I finished recording, producing and mixing a norwegian band's debut album.
St. Helen | Free Music, Tour Dates, Photos, Videos

The single was released today and the album will be released on february 10th. I'm psyched.

Mastered by Propeller Mastering, Oslo

As for the sound, the band was very picky about how they wanted it.
Squeeky guitars and generally little bass was a must. I feel that I've met their requirements and they are very happy.

I think it's pretty solid. There are little things that I would've maybe done just slightly different, but it's really good overall. Just comes down to personal taste I suppose.

I like the sounds of the guitars and your use of the stereo field.

I suppose I would've liked to have heard the lead vocals just a little more upfront in the mix. And maybe a little automated bump in the volumes going into choruses ... like a dB or two for some more energy.

Overall a really solid job.

To my ears anyway the bass is quite loud in the mix both on cans and my monitors. Particularly when it moves to a D note. I quite like the snare sound and I disagree with a previous poster that the vocals should be more upfront in the mix. I think they're already quite loud enough to begin with and raising them any further would make the band appear far too quiet in comparison.

Cheers, Mark.

Thank you for the feedback. I was mostly refering to the guitars having less bass. The bass guitar itself is quite loud on purpose.

Thank you for replying. Yes, there are things I could've done differently, but in the end the band was happy.

If it was up to me I think I would've mixed it with more midtones/bass in the guitars for a warmer sound. But I don't think it would've made the song any better.

I'm so glad the 80s are back in music. I'm serious. Really good job. I agree the lead vocals are great where they are level wise, only they sound a little bit boxy to me, like there's a resonance in the midrange, almost telephone-like. I would try to make it sound more open.

Thank you. Yes, there is some resonance going on in the recording. I wanted to re-record the lead vocals, but the band was happy with it. I have tried EQing all over the place. I did not want it to be too sibilant. But your point is noted. I agree
