MIXOFF - electric guitar, organic pop rock

Somebody said I should do a mix off ... and since I'd really like to hear how other people would do things ... here we go!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58455199/Right%20Time.mp3 My ITB mixed version

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58455199/Rig...h%20Tracks.zip
Zip file of the raw .WAV files.

The song was recorded two years ago and used on an episode of Cougar Town (ABC) last year. Originally mixed by Dean Baskerville at Jackpot Studios in Portland. I'm attaching my own ITB mixed version for reference, but you can listen to his on my website. Brian Ellefson ... it's much better than mine

Here's the rough tracks. Please let me know if you've got any questions and if you mix it, PLEASE give some insight into HOW you did things ... I.E. eq, compression settings on vocals, etc. NOTE: These are rough tracks, no EQ, compression, reverb, auto tune, or effects of any kind.

Thanks so much.

PS - I'm still learning to mix my own stuff so any input on things is really appreciated.

I know, I know, someone has undoubtedly downloaded the rough tracks and thought, "I cannot work with these pieces of crap." It's okay. I promise I won't go drink a gallon of Clorox over it.

Ha!
Just a quick mix so you wouldn't go off the deep end.

I am building a new mastering room so I am mastering in my office with a couple of bass traps. The original mix may be more present and the vocal a little more forward, but that can all be changed very easily by a good mastering engineer.
Great song though,my 15 year old daughter that knows the words to every song ever written I think, liked it a lot.

Another version, rolled a little off the top.

Nice work, man. I could hear some upper mids that I couldn't hear in my own mix. Also, did you auto-tune my vocals? I swear I could hear some tiny differences in there. Just curious. No big deal.

Jahala, thanks for the mix. Pretty cool to hear the difference from one to the other. Thanks for the good words, too. When I recorded this I tried very hard to do one-takes with all instruments and vocals so it took a long time to get this stuff right. It's still not "right" - you can hear little timing issues between the two electrics, but I was happy to leave that kind of stuff alone. Makes it more natural. Thanks again, man. I really liked listening to your mix.

Ok, here's about an hour or so worth of mixing all ITB. I just want to say, this is such a great song, brilliant vocals! Very Jack Johnson-ish, I know you prbly get that a lot, but it's totally awesome! Hope you like, I'll revisit tonight.

Cheers

I like it. I'm keen to give it a go.

I'd love to hear some brass and organ in the chorus, if you ever get a chance to record it again.

A.

Updated mix, did some automation and tweaked eqs. Brought the level of the song up a bit as well. Awesome tune!

Here is what I came up with. I am a huge fan of multiband compression on vocals and used the Waves C4 on these. Most of this mix was straitforward. I added some reverb to the whole mix and added extra to drums just to get rid of the dryness. Nothing drastic. Just enough to sound natural. The guitars needed a slight eq and compression to even them out. I really had difficulty getting the bass to sound how I wanted so I kinda just went with what you had and cut a few freq that were sticking out a bit too much and compressed. Hope you like how it sounds. Great song too.

This has been pretty cool ... to hear how other people would treat the stuff I'm recording. Crazy how different the mixes can sound from one to the next. Vocals, drums, use of reverb, compression, etc. It's been really cool and kind've of a learning experience for me, too. So thanks to anyone who's put up a mix. I appreciate that!

I'm working on my own mixing skills so being able to hear how other people do things has been really nice.

And I TOTALLY agree with the guy that said he'd like to hear some brass and other things in the mix. If I would've had the budget back when I released the song I totally would've explored that.

Thanks again everyone.

30 Minute mix. Didn't do much. Each track is run through an SSL 4000G channel with dyn and EQ, nothing too special. Reverb and parallel compression on the drums. the reverb on the drums is being fed by the parallel compression. Really enjoyed mixing the song though. Let me know what you think. I'm not in love with my mix.

Thank you for sharing you song. It is a great song hope it breaks big for you.

Good luck on your release btw.

Just added some semi dissonant horns as padding, didn't do a good job I am pretty sure almost anyone else could do a better job. Otherwise it was pretty clean the way it was.

Thanks again for letting people play with your song.

I had some free minutes - I look at this mix as an experiment to get some artificial drums sounding the way I can halfway listen to em ... I so much prefer live drums ...
Another goal was to get the bass as boomy and big as possible without destryoing the vocals/atmosphere ...

Great singer - great song!

Hey man ... thanks for the mix. I liked the reverb you put on the vox. Also, there's a little distortion on them that was kinda cool, too. And yes ... you made the bass pop without running into the vocals. Nice work. Thanks so much for taking the time. -Brian

I've gotta apologize guys ... I took down the tracks a few days ago because I was using that dropbox for some public stuff (and didn't want to give other people access to em). Sorry. I'll see if I can put em back up within the next day or so.

Found out I all ready downloaded the files back when they were put up!...
So I did a mix of this today.
I replaced the Kick and made my own OHs out the drum tracks.
So kick and OH are fully replaced.
And its not mastered so you need to turn it up a bit.

Hope you like it
