Hey guys does the song suck? Does the mix suck? Why no response?

People can be kinda fickle around here ... don't be offended if it takes time for people to respond. Okay, remember all of this is my opinion: I kinda expected the mix to pop out more in my face at the 0:19 mark, but it never really rises in energy. I would take a serious look at how you've got the tracks and song compressed and see if you can automate like a 2dB+ jump in overall volume on the track somewhere in there to really kick it in. But I just wanted things to really kick at 0:19 - feels natural right there. What did you mix on, monitor-wise? Just curious because the mix is missing some bottom end. I kinda wanted to hear more low end and more guts on the guitars. Don't get me wrong, the mix doesn't sound bad and the guitars on there own sound good, but I think there's more going on down there in the lows and lower-mids that could be dialed in for energy. Lastly, I think the vocals need to stand out just a tad better. Hope that helps. |

| Gear maniac | Thanks for your response. My monitors are Yamaha HS80M in a treated room (pretty good down to 100 hz or so...passable, not great below 100). I'd probably benefit from adding a sub to the rig and would definitely benefit from some tuned traps around 75 hz. I doubt that I'll be able to hear effectively enough to improve the low end much. I like the idea of cranking it up at 0:19. I think I could work that in with just a little automation on the compressor plug at the 2-bus. I've never done it before, but I intend to have this album professionally mastered. Do you think that the low end could be improved at mastering where hopefully the tech will have a better room than I do or do I need to try to find a way of working on it before? And Vox: Are you talking about volume or did you have something else in mind? Thanks again for your reply and for checking out the tune. bps |

No my genre, so disregard as you see fit: 1) Way too much deep bass. You're possibly not hearing this in your room, but a spectrometer will reveal lots of bandwidth being wasted below 70 Hz. On the other hand, the mix is bass-shy in the round/warmth range. 2) As Brian suggests, the mix and arrangement are static and, despite all the loud angry angst, is lifeless. 3) How about less click on the kick, at least until "the full band comes in" so it sounds less plastic. |
