| Gear maniac | Okay, keep in mind that what I'm about to write is just MY opinion and the stuff that I'd do to this mix. Others may disagree and have a totally different set of things. So here goes ... To me, everything is TOO upfront. The vocals should be front and center in the mix and everything else, or most other things, should sit just behind them. I would experiment with EQ cutting and some reverb to get things to back off a bit. There's overall a lot of high EQ on all of the instruments for my taste. The vocals still cut through, but those high freqs can start accumulating and competing with each others and the top end of the vocals. I would go through and shelve off some of those high freqs about 1-2Khz and experiment with what that does to your mix. do some drastic EQ cutting to the harmonies in the chorus. Try taking away the bottom end by about 5 dB on freqs below 200Hz on the harmony vocals and taking away a bit of their tops. This will help them sit better behind the primary vocals. I think you're on the right track. The instrumentation and production is pretty good, it just needs massaging to get it all to "stick together" in a mix better. You want to give things their own space in the mix, give it a 3D feel with things sounding upfront (VOX) and set back (background VOX, some of the synths). Some EQ sculpting and experimenting with reverb will start giving you an idea of how to accomplish that. LASTLY: Although I'm telling you things about specific EQs, try to start with what your ears are telling you and not your eyes. It's really easy to look at EQ and make choices based on what you see instead of hear. Just FYI. Like I said ... just my opinions and others may tell you entirely different things. |
