Thread Starter | Suitcase and cardboard
So, I'm listening to this again and realize that I actually can't stand my own voice. and the song is actually pretty corny. But that's not the point...the point is, it was recorded using a suitcase kick drum, cardboard w/ brushes for the shaker sound, a tom tom, snare, wurlitzer, and a few bass samples and additional shaker samples. Only 1 mic was used for everything...the AT 4033. I played everything...I don't know if I should admit that... Now, I'm severely manic depressive and a bit of a borderline personality freakshow, and last summer I was living in a warehouse in upstate new york, and became convinced that one could get ringo's drum sound by using one cheap mic, a suitcase, and a very very damped down snare. Lots of cloth on it, to make it match the suitcase kick in volume. Then I took the cheap condenser and kind of placed it about three feet in front of the kick to record the whole shebang. Now...I didn't get that big a sound out of the suitcase on this song, admittedly. However, at times I have managed to get a pretty convincing thump...and it kind of sounds tight, like a kick that has already been eq'd and compressed. Also I think cardboard is a very underappreciated percussion accessory. Of course, all this is before I lost my mind and ended up at my girlfriend's mom's house (who was away) walking around in circles for three months, banging my head against the wall, realizing that all I ever thought about were things like suitcase kick drums, making market research software applications based on measuring everything that happens on television in a quantifiable way and modeling it statistically and selling it to advertisers, working side jobs for a ridiculously surreal infomercial company and spending all my money having people design bizarre music software programs meant to change the music industry in a matter of weeks. Now my life is a mess. I wish I liked accounting.

I like it a lot... The drums sounds great and your voice is cool. Great song!
