Thread Starter | First Drum recording in treated low ceiling 10X10 room
Here's a clip of us foolin around and testing the room sound in the studio after completing the bass traps and broadband absorbers. Hope you like! You can hear the cheap setup on the snare's gate... hey this was for fun! Jason

Glad you're liking the drums! I'll tell you before treating the room... they sucked! Toms are sennheiser 604's through API 3124 Snare is beta 56 through great river MP2-NV, GR EQ-2NV, Distressor Kick is Beta 52 and same chain as snare OH's are KM184's in XY through two Avalon VT-737's, RMS 755 compressor Room is AEA R84 through API All tracks in @ 32bit-48K from Apogee AD 16X reverb is a slight touch of UAD140 plate but for the session I'm anxious to put the KSP8 to the test! Sounds very nice. Can you post a few pics of the room and treatments and the mics/kit. If you cannot do pics, then can you describe the room (floor) and acoustics. This is one of the best sounds I have heard from a small room that is square in dimensions and with a low ceiling to boot. A very solid sound indeed. What tracks did you apply that (UAD140) reverb to? I am very impressed. You are there...

Thanks. I actually bumped into the thread while cruising the other parts of GS. I see this was a long project for you. I too did 703 throughout my room, but did not do frames. I covered them with burlap and also built 4 diffusors which are framed of course. The diffusors are filled with the 703 covered in burlap as well. Working out well. I built them a bit over 2 years ago, and am thinking of doing more. Most of mine are 2 inch with the exception of 4 panels that are doubled up and 4 inches deep. What is your floor now? Concrete, carpet, hardwood? Your dad looks like a cool dude! |

floor is a comercial type carpet covering cement. UAD140 plate was applied to the toms/snare/overheads through aux send/return Man I love that Great River EQ... it's absolutely insane! Jason |

Yes, you have a good chain going there. What kind of kit is this? It sounds nice. The toms are ripping with great low end. I noticed you are right up there with the levels too, and punchy as all hell. Did you comp or limit the mix? If so, with what? So I understand the flooring is that real thin commercial carpet on top of concrete... If it is what I am thinking of, it is very thin and not doing much but knocking down some reflections mostly, but not sucking up your highs really or mids. You have a good sound going there for a small tracking room. You have done well.

Thanks SRS The kit is Pearl, I can get back to you on the exact model. Drummer is a hard hitter and giving an almost natural punch compression. The mix has an RComp on the buss doing a -3db comp for fun. I would use something else for a real mix. Tom sound comes moslty from the Overheads and accented with the 604's but those API's are lovely on Toms!! Kick and Snare have a distressor doing -3 @ 2:1 on kick and snare -5@2:1 all with HP filter and Distortion 3 mode on. I hit the converters at about 0dbVU = -16dbfs And the commercial carpet is very thin and though like material. I can post pics very shoretly. Jason |

Jason, Right on. Thanks for the elaboration on the setup. If it is a Pearl kit, sounds like a "Session Series" model if I were to guess... I use the RComp often as well. Not a bad plug. What did you record the tracks to? A Mac/pc/software or external recorder? Any tape in there? Sorry to bug on all the questions, but just had a few final ones for you. Gotta spread the knowledge like the sluts we are. |

SRS: no worries about the questions.... I'm here to help and to be helped by others. The drums are Pearl Export Series. Very good sounding drums. Overheads are slightly out in front and on that track, they are turned down a tad to the overall kit... there is a room mic also picking up the meat R84. OH's played a big part here. He's really hitting the living daylights out of the shells on this kit and taking it easy on the brass. (He's learning to drum in the studio) Anything else comes to mind, don't hesitate to ask...
