How to really SUCK...

Is this worth mastering? A guitarist told me there are phase issues with the track...not that I can hear a problem, but I don't really have golden ears - any comments?

EDIT: LINK REMOVED

Thx,
MM

yeah for sure it has phase problems...there's almost no center...
can't say for sure how you got there but looks like you messed something up after tracking....maybe you've done an m/s matrix and forgot the m? or maybe some sort of stereo enhancer plug-in

listen closely to your mix and try disabling each plug one at a time, and you'll surely find what causes this....

otherwise the song looks ok

No plug ins on this tune - it was recorded to a stand alone HD recorder and mixed thru a console w/outboard fx.

What could I have done to create this phase issue?

Hi,
I played around with the file. You certainly have phase problems in it. I phase reversed the right channel and put some plugs on it.

edit

It seems like the right channel is lower in volume than I could expect it to be.

Think you have to have a check on the phase and the panning.

...maybe some of your cables are phase reversed, been through that once myself.

Good song by the way.

Hey nice edit! That's more like how it should sound....

I have a feeling that you're correct.

How can I check to know if I have a cable that is phase reversed?

thx, MM

MM,
In my case I had made a master to my Studer and the signals were a bit to hot to put back to the computer so I built a a box to be able to adjust the signal levels....and after this it started to sound so bad.......thought it was my box of course....double checked it....found nothing wrong there.....cables are so simple, cannot be anything wrong there......

It was one of my cables. I had made an error soldering the hot and cold and one point.

The easiest way to check your cables is to check the colors of the cords and see that they are connected to the right numbers....but I guess factory made cables should not have that problem though.

Did you have the same problem during mixing or only after when doing the 2-track?

During the mix it was fine.

However, I came stereo out of the digital console and into a pair of neotek elite channel strips, then into a SSL compressor before finally hitting the CD.

I have a feeling that one of the cables in this final analog chain is the culprit.

I do solder them myself...

Hmm. I listened to the original track and the edit. Where speceifically do you hear the phase issues? I suppose it kind of worries me that I cannot hear it. Can someone post the track time where this is happening? Which instrument/voice do you hear it on?

Again-- You are worrying me. Listening on my NS-10Ms. Are you hearing this on every voice? In the "warbling" effect? Where specifically? Give more info plz. I know what out-of-phase guitars or OHs sound like, but I am not hearing cancellation. Did he replace the original upload with the edit? Download the original and let me know. I'm viewing both on Audition and they look IDENTICAL. Am I ******** or just deaf?

You are right. Guess he has changed the file on his site. Phase reverse one channel back and you'll hear how it sounded. We'll have to see what he says. Maybe I'm a psycho.....

I remember how the Phase Scope analyzer looked like in Wavelab with the original file and how it became.....
