Work in progress mix test

I got inspired by some photos I saw of Bearsville studio back in the 70's where they had these huge JBL home stereo speakers sitting above the console in studio B along with auratones and another set of bookshelve's(unknown what brand), I pulled out the old Cerwin Vega's a few months ago, had them re-built and decided to try a mix on them, they're U351's, 15" Woofer, 5" mid range and 1" tweeter. The Tweeter and Mid have frequency adjustment on the back of the speaker. I did some adjustments and tried this mix. Let me know how it sounds to you and if possible what you listened back on to give me an idea of translation.

This brings back memories for me as well, sitting in studios A&B at Bearsville a couple of times in the late 80s and early 90s, what a cool place! It was mindblowing to sit at the SSL that Clearmountain and others had mixed such great records with, and the Neve 8078 in studio A from the old Who days.

Your mix bring back memories as well, I mixed my first stuff on a set of Pioneer HPM-100 3-ways from 1/2 inch 8 track tape. The music was similar to the song you have here. Things are sounding pretty good, there seems to be some build up centered in the 200-250hz range clouding things a bit. Probably a bit of a monitor tuning/translation issue. The hi hat is very strange and harsh sounding for some reason as well. Good stuff!

Ok, Thanks. I didn't mic the high hat so that may be why it's kinda weird sounding, Maybe a little phasey. I also didn't touch the EQ on the overheads except for some hi pass filtering so maybe I'll make some adjustments on the EQ, I'll goof around with the mid range adjustment a little more to see if I can get rid of that build up.

I always dreamed of going to Bearsville studios, had I become a pro musician I definately would have liked to record there, but now it's gone and all there is are scattered photos on the web.....

Try cutting some upper-mid on the OHs, sweep around in the 3-6k range and you will probably find the issue. What mics did you use for them anyway?

The really cool thing about Bearsville as well, were the houses on the property that you lived in while you were working there, and the amazingly peaceful Woodstock area vibe.

I used some cheap CAD CM217's for the overheads, SM 57's on everything else and a Behringer SM 58 copy for the Kick. I definately need to beef up my mic closet!.....

A friend of mine went up to Todd Rundgren's old property on Mink Hollow Rd, down the street from Bearsville and got some pictures of his house and studio.

unfortunately a few weeks after these pic's were taken the whole property was bulldozed......
