| Lives for gear | Mix off / 3 band eq challenge? (Pro tools only)
I don't know if this would be entirely stupid, but I was thinking of how challenging (impossible?) it would be to mix an entire song with a simple 3 band EQ. I'm not talking about a parametric EQ, but maybe something along the lines of masseys 3 band eq. Just 3 knobs for more or less, but no frequency or Q controls. You could use any other plugs you wanted on the song, but the only type of EQ you could use would be that 3 band. Now I know a lot of guys on here jump up and say "mixoff" with intentions of getting their tracks mixed, so to avoid that drama, I think it would be awesome if someone had a little track leftover from something that they could upload for this. Anyone down to do this? I think we could just use the massey vt3 for the official plug because of the free demos. If anyone else is interested in this let me know. Also, if you think that this is entirely too stupid to try, admins can feel free to delete this. Just something that was on my mind that I wanted discuss / possibly try. P.S. I know that the possible results of this type of challenge wouldn't necessarily be as aesthetic to the ears as using the real cool surgical EQs that we have now days, but thats not the point of this challenge. The point would be to see how well we could get things done with real simple tools. And if we got some good mixes going, it would demonstrate that we don't always need insanely perfect tools. I dont know, just a fun thing I guess.

This thread didn't get too much attention but I'm curious to know who mix with 3 bands eq only? I do, and I can tell you it ain't always easy, I've got a low shelf with the choice of 40hz, 80hz and 160hz, I've got a mid bell eq with 11 fixed frequencies to choose from and a Q control and I've got a high shelf with the choice of 6K, 10K and 15K. I also have a high pass filter with the choice of 60hz or 120hz. Those are the eq on my console, in the future I'd like to add some controllable low pass filter and some external eq with more bands but for now I use what I've got. Anybody else use only 3 bands to mix? |

Nope. I never fully mixed a track with all tracks using a 3 band eq. I've used a 3 band eq on SOME tracks, but not all. I think it would be difficult, but obviously its possible. I would still love to do this challenge.
