Thread Starter | Just released 12 vinyl records!
That is correct: I released 12 unique vinyl records at the same time! Here are a few examples: ... this is true, and the records are real, but not in a typical way ;-) They are part of an installation project I did, called "Apologia", which included a set of 12 records. My idea was to design the labels for the records, which would hopefully help people imagine what sort of music was on them. Even though the installation was essentially silent, I like to think that it was very much about music. The labels themselves are basically drawings. I drew these by hand at %200, then reduced the size, added some small type elements, printed, cut them and glued them on the early Edison Diamond Discs (which I got from Craigslist). In any case I thought you guys might enjoy some of the designs. If you would like to see the complete set of 12 discs with both sides pictured, and some details, take a look at the Project Documentation Page. Sincerely, p. |

Thread Starter | I know! ;-) Although, technically these are not even vinyl... The Edison Diamond Discs were made of some sort of early plastic material. The unusual feature of these discs is that they are approximately 1/4 inch thick. Much thicker than standard vinyl. p. |

Thank you for the note! Actually, I really liked the term Copula because of it's multiple references and possible interpretations that change based on context. Since in the most general sense it suggests a form of linking, I thought it worked really well for this project: linking sound and history, sound and image, connection between people that music facilitates etc. etc... In fact I almost used this word as a title for the whole project! Eventually decided not to do that, because of the obvious sexual connotation, which I did not want to be the main frame of reference ;-) p.

Beautiful designs on the labels, but I'm a bit confused - are they vinyls that you have cut/had cut with your music on? Or is it just the labels we should be looking at and the vinyls are just any vinyls that you needed for the exhibition (i.e. no music or not your music on them..)??

In this particular piece my direction was to create an "idea" of a song by designing the labels/objects. As you can see the records are displayed in the enclosed cases, ostensibly inaccessible for listening, so all you have is the label (with the text and images I wrote/drew) to imagine what the compositions might be like. I work with sound a lot, but in this work I was trying to approach the idea of sound from a different angle. The installation is in reality perfectly silent, but it is dealing with sound in various ways... p.

The image and the visual presentation certainly affects your expectations of the music you're about to listen to, so if you don't actually have any music, all you're left with is the expectation itself. Sortof the ultimate in minimalistic composing. Were I to listen to these, I believe the first and the fourth records would be the ones I'd check out first.
