How's my rock and roll coming along?

I'm recording my bands new album and I'm slowly getting to the point where I have to be worrying about what coming out rather than what's going in.
This is the first song finished instrumentally so it's what I've been using to set in tones and experiment. We haven't started tracking vocals at all yet.

So far I'm happy with what I have. But it feels like there's something that isn't quite right, yet I can't put my finger on it.

Any advice, input, comments, inquiries, ect. would be greatly appreciated!!

I think the tracks need eq work so that they'll fit together a little better. The bass is invading on a lot of things. I think it needs shaped with eq the most.

The drums sound almost like you used nothing but a pair of overheads to track them. I hear too much of the cymbals and everything else sounds boxy. Not knowing how you recorded the drums, I don't know what you have to work with in the mix so I'm not sure how you'll have to approach fixing this.

Great heavy guitar tones. You may hate it, but you may have to give them a little hi-pass so that they stay separated from the bass. It's hard to tell on the speakers I'm listening on whether the bass is just taking up too much of the spectrum or if you'll need to work the heavy guits too.

I think that bass, while it sounds good, is really clouding up the mix a lot. As soon as it comes in the clean guitar is just eaten alive by it. Some major eq work is needed on the bass so that it comes through as clearly as it seems that you want it to without clouding up the entire mix.

The kick is too big too. I've listened several times now and I keep hearing little things to work on.

The next step is to think of eq similar to the way you think of panning. Each track needs its place. It's up to you to carve it out with eq.

I like the song. Some nice heaviness and a little blues. I'd like to hear it finished and with vocals.

happy mixing.

Since bps already did a great job explaining what may need sonically improved, I'll just say that I hear a very distinct jump (mistake/edit?) in the guitar track at 2:31.

Low mids are creating mud.

Great song.

Fun song!
I agree with the posters above about needing to get the bass and the guitars to play nice together, probably with some eq. It's hard with that kind of bass sound. I think it would actually sound heavier if there was some cleaner low end to the bass for those chunky guitars to ride on top of. Do you have a DI bass track to add in?
Maybe try to find some upper mid frequencies you can boost to get the guitar solo to pop out a bit further as well.
What drum tracks have you got to work with?

Thanks for the pointers guys!

I started chizzling away at the EQs yesterday for a bit. I'll probably be posting another mix today/tonight.

Everything is recorded in my house in a glass room with two mattresses stacked on top of each other behind the drums.

Drums are recorded with 8 mics
Snare - Blue Encore 200
Rack Tom - SM 57
Floor Tom - PG 57
Kick - Audio Technica 3035
OHs - 2 Audio Technnica 3031
Room 1 - Aurycle A460
Room 2 - Blue Woodpecker

I definitely can see that I'm relying too heavily on my OH and Room mics, even though I was attempting to keep at least the rooms low in the mix
().
Bass doesn't have a DI unfortunately. It's recorded through my band's Ampeg STV-200T and 6x10 with my 3035 and A460 bussed together.
Guitars are Mesa Roadking II and Cab with the 3035 and A460.
I've been adjusting my guitar high pass, as well, along with a little more bass EQing and it seems to be clearing some of the mud.
Im starting to think the majority of my problems in the drum tracks area... and my editing mistakes .

I really appreciate the input and I'm extremely glad you guys like the song! Again, thanks everyone!

Sounds pretty decent aside from the aforementioned EQ issues. What mic preamps did you use?

I use my Firepod in standby mode for everything with the exception of my BLA Auteur for OH's and my ART Pro Channel for Kick.
