Here's what jumps out at me: the guitars sound like they have to much ambience to them. Were they closed mic'd? Maybe try backing the guitar room mics way down if you've got em. If not, I'de try to cut some 200-350hz range eq and add a bit of 1-4k ish to make em cut some more. Otherwise, I dig the drums, and vocals.. Nice vocal fx. How did you come up with the vocal sound? (the 1st song) ERic

listened to the first two and they sound good. 'perfect lines' is a better i think.. the instrumental tracks could use sharpening up in the mid range. it's a bit unfocused with the 'airy guitars' as has been said. also the mixes are a little thin and i think could use some more punch in the low end, nothing subby or anything... just some more oomph maybe 110-130 hz... nice mix with the vox tho,, a little too much reverb for my taste or maybe the reverb could be less sharp,, roll off more of the high end on it. sweet.

thanks for the feedback! The guitars were close-mic'ed. The ambience is Silverspike Room Machine. I liked it, but maybe its a bit too much. I spent alot of time with the vox, messing with some different reverb sounds and delays. They are compressed really hard. The reverb might be a tad over the top, I'm still kind of an amatuer and I know that amatuers tend to get carried away with the 'verb. Although I thought it kind of suited these tunes, especially Lust and Perfect Lines. Dry Skin goes back and forth between a real dry vocal, and the heavy part has a vocal with alot of delay... I did roll-off the top off the verb on those mixes, down to the neighborhood of 5k or so. do you guys go lower than that? There is good bit of nasty fizzy stuff pulled out of the guitars. They are shelved at around 4k or 5k (I think, I have to double-check when I get home). Weirdly, there wasn't too much content around 1-2k when I looked at the guitar with Voxengo Span. Also, they are high-passed at about 130Hz, which is maybe a bit too high? Maybe thats why its thin. I'm trying to watch my low-mids. It sounds like there is a fine line between boomy and thin! The bass guitar is prolly a bit thin too. Most of this stuff was tracked on a Tascam 688 8-track cassette deck, which is not a very robust format to begin with. Only the 2nd guitar and vox were overdubbed on the PC. thanks again! |
